Simultaneous Measurements of Fuel Areal Density, Shell Areal Density, and Fuel Temperature in D3He-Filled Imploding Capsules

چکیده

LLE Review, Volume 78 93 Measurements of the charged-particle products of the fusion reactions from an imploding inertial fusion capsule can provide a direct means of characterizing key aspects of the implosion dynamics. Parameters such as the fusion yield, fuel ion temperature, capsule convergence, fuel and shell areal densities, and implosion asymmetry can be inferred by these measurements and can complement and augment similar measurements made using fusion neutrons or x-ray techniques. In addition, such measurements provide unique information on charging up the target and on charged-particle acceleration. In collaboration with MIT and LLNL, LLE has developed two charged-particle magnetic spectrometers that have been implemented on OMEGA.

Performance of Direct-Drive Cryogenic Targets on OMEGA

LLE Review, Volume 113 16 Introduction In the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) approach to fusion, a spherical shell filled with a deuterium–tritium (DT) mixture is compressed to reach a temperature of 10 to 12 keV in the lower-density central core region (hot spot) to initiate a burn wave through the higher-density colder main fuel surrounding the core.1–3 The main fuel areal density (tR) at ...

Section 2 PROGRESS IN LASER FUSION

LLE is presently involved in a series of experiments 'intended to demonstrate the ability of direct-drive laser fusion to ablatively compress microencapsulated deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel to 200 times its liquid density. This campaign has been structured into three parts. The first part was initiated in February 1985 and involved the implosion of glass microballoons filled with various pressure...

D-He Proton Spectra for Diagnosing Shell ρR and Fuel Ti of Imploded Capsules at OMEGA

Recent work has resulted in the first high-resolution, spectroscopic measurements of energetic charged particles on OMEGA. Energy spectra of charged fusion products have been obtained from two spectrometers, and have been used to deduce various physical quantities in imploded capsules. In this paper we discuss the first use of 14.7-MeV D-He proton spectra for diagnosing shell areal density (ρR)...

Study of Direct-Drive, DT-Gas-Filled-Plastic-Capsule Implosions Using Nuclear Diagnostics on OMEGA

54 LLE Review, Volume 86 Introduction High-gain inertial confinement fusion (ICF) requires uniform compression of a spherical capsule to a state of high density and temperature;1–3 current research is aimed at finding ways to achieve this goal. This article describes how a range of traditional and new nuclear diagnostics are used to study the compression performance of deuterium-tritium (DT)-fi...

Theory of Hydro-Equivalent Ignition for Inertial Fusion and Its Applications to OMEGA and the National Ignition Facility

Introduction In inertial confinement fusion (ICF),1 a spherical capsule is illuminated either directly with laser light2 or indirectly within x rays generated by laser irradiation of the walls of a container (hohlraum) enclosing the capsule.3 The capsule consists of a cryogenic layer of deuterium and tritium (DT) frozen onto the inner surface of a spherical shell of ablator material. Photons ar...
