چکیده

The ability to express emotions is important for creating believable interactive characters. To simulate emotional expressions in an interactive environment, an intelligent agent needs both an adaptive model for generating believable responses, and a visualizationmodel for mapping emotions into facial expressions. Recent advances in intelligent agents and in facial modeling have produced effective algorithms for these tasks independently. In this paper, we describe a method for integrating these algorithms to create an interactive simulation of an agent that produces appropriate facial expressions in a dynamic environment. Our approach to combining a model of emotions with a facial model represents a first step towards developing the technology of a truly believable interactive agent, which has a wide range of applications from designing intelligent training systems to video games and animation tools.

A model of gaze for the purpose of emotional expression in virtual embodied agents

Currently, state of the art virtual agents lack the ability to display emotion as seen in actual humans, or even in hand-animated characters. One reason for the emotional inexpressiveness of virtual agents is the lack of emotionally expressive gaze manner. For virtual agents to express emotion that observers can empathize with, they need to generate gaze including eye, head, and torso movement ...

Emotionally Expressive Head and Body Movement During Gaze Shifts

The current state of the art virtual characters fall far short of characters produced by skilled animators. One reason for this is that the physical behaviors of virtual characters do not express the emotions and attitudes of the character adequately. A key deficiency possessed by virtual characters is that their gaze behavior is not emotionally expressive. This paper describes work on expressi...

Towards Expressive Gaze Manner in Embodied Virtual Agents

Empathy can be viewed in largely cognitive terms as the ability to do role taking, specifically to perceive, imagine and take on the psychological point of view of another [Piaget, 1965]. It also can be seen in more affective terms, specifically to react emotionally to another’s emotional state. [e.g., Stotland, 1978]. In either case, revealing a person’s, or a virtual character’s, internal sta...
