چکیده

[1] We performed laboratory experiments of thermochemical convection in order to determine the rate at which an initially density-stratified, and hence layered, mantle will be homogenized. In the experiments, two layers of fluid with similar viscosities are superposed and heated from below. Initially, in the ‘‘stratified’’ regime, mechanical entrainment into both layers occurs by viscous coupling and theoretical models for the entrainment rate agree well with our experimental data. Over time entrainment and mixing reduce the density difference between the layers until the ‘‘doming’’ regime is reached. The density interface becomes unstable, thermal plumes of the dense fluid penetrate into the overlying layer and the entrainment rate reaches a constant. Applying our results to the Earth’s mantle, we confirm that it is possible for a compositionally distinct layer to persist over the age of the Earth, even if the initial density difference is less than 2%.

Pulsating diapiric flows: Consequences of vertical variations in mantle creep laws

Peter van Keken a, David A. Yuen b and Arie van den Berg a Received November 21, 1991, revision accepted June 17, 1992 Recent laboratory work has suggested that the rheology of the lower mantle may be Newtonian. We have studied the time-dependent dynamics of plumes interacting with a rheological interface separating an upper non-Newtonian mantle and a Newtonian lower mantle . Pulsating diapiric...

Geodynamic and seismic constraints on the thermochemical structure and dynamics of convection in the deep mantle.

We revisit a recent study by Forte & Mitrovica in which global geophysical observables associated with mantle convection were inverted and the existence of a strong increase in viscosity near a depth of 2000 km was inferred. Employing mineral-physics data and theory we also showed that, although there are chemical anomalies in the lowermost mantle, they are unable to inhibit the dominant therma...

Magma genesis, plate tectonics, and chemical differentiation of the Earth

Magma genesis, migration, and eruption have played prominent roles in the chemical differentiation of the Earth. Plate tectonics has provided the framework of tectonic environments for different suites of igneous rocks and the dynamic mechanisms for moving masses of rock into melting regions. Petrology is rooted in geophysics. Petrological and geophysical processes are calibrated by the phase e...

Canopy gaps characteristics and structural dynamics in a natural unmanaged oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stand in the north of Iran

Canopy gaps are one of the most important structural features of forest ecosystems, and studying of them can have useful results and implications for forest management. The aim of this study is investigation of characteristics and regeneration within canopy gaps in an intact beech stand in the Shastkalateh Experimental Forest of Hyrcanian region, north of Iran. All canopy gaps and related fores...

The Bivalve Corbicula fluminalis (Müller, 1774): an Indicator for Heavy Metals Accumulation in the Habitat of Zayandeh-Roud River

The accumulation of the heavy metals Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb were surveyed in the samples of mantle tissues, crusts and so the habitat sediments of C. fluminalis to reveal the probable biomonitoring rule of the bivalve in the ecosystem. The warm-cold seasonally samplings were carried out over the stations of Zayandeh-Roud River in Safi'eh, Isfahan province, during 2014.  The warm and cold seasonal a...
