چکیده

The pattern “Define Hybrid Class Resolving Disjointness due to Subsumption” is proposed as a Logical Ontology Design Pattern (Logical OP) solving a problem of disjointness inconsistency caused by a subsumption relation. Further away from solving design problems where the primitives of the representation language do not directly support certain logical constructs, this pattern helps resolving a logical inconsistency triggered by a situation of disjoint classes subsuming a common subclass. The solution presented by the pattern resolves the inconsistency while preserving existing knowledge, i.e. a resolution alternative avoiding axiom deletion.

Automatic acquisition of class disjointness

Although it is widely acknowledged that adding class disjointness to ontologies enables a wide range of interesting applications, this type of axiom is rarely used on today’s Semantic Web. This is due to the enormous skill and effort required to make the necessary modeling decisions. Automatically generating disjointness axioms could lower the barrier of entry and lead to a wider spread adoptio...

Communication Complexity of Set-Disjointness for All Probabilities

We study set-disjointness in a generalized model of randomized two-party communication where the probability of acceptance must be at least α(n) on yes-inputs and at most β(n) on no-inputs, for some functions α(n) > β(n). Our main result is a complete characterization of the private-coin communication complexity of set-disjointness for all functions α and β, and a near-complete characterization...

Dealing with Inconsistencies due to Class Disjointness in SPARQL Update

The problem of updating ontologies has received increased attention in recent years. In the approaches proposed so far, either the update language is restricted to (sets of) atomic updates, or, where the full SPARQL Update language is allowed, the TBox language is restricted to RDFS where no inconsistencies can arise. In this paper we discuss directions to overcome these limitations. Starting f...

Hybrid abductive inductive learning

This thesis introduces a new Machine Learning technique called Hybrid Abductive Inductive Learning (HAIL) that integrates Abductive Logic Programming (ALP) and Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) in order to automate the learning of first-order theories from examples and prior knowledge. A semantics is proposed called Kernel Set Subsumption (KSS) that generalises the well-known inference method o...

Handling Inconsistencies Due to Class Disjointness in SPARQL Updates

The problem of updating ontologies has received increased attention in recent years. In the approaches proposed so far, either the update language is restricted to sets of ground atoms or, where the full SPARQL update language is allowed, the TBox language is restricted so that no inconsistencies can arise. In this paper we discuss directions to overcome these limitations. Starting from a DL-Li...
