چکیده

Particle heating in advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) by nonlinear MHD (Alfvénic) turbulence is investigated. Such turbulence with highly-fluctuating magnetic fields, B̃ ∼ B0, is believed to be naturally produced by the magnetic shearing instability near the nonlinear saturation. It is shown that the energy is dissipated in the parallel cascade, which occurs due to nonlinear compressibility of high-amplitude turbulence, and predominantly heats protons, but not electrons. The conservative limit on the electron–to–proton heating fraction is δ ∼< few × 10. Subject headings: accretion, accretion discs — MHD — plasmas — turbulence — waves

On the Energetics of Advection-Dominated Accretion Flows

Using mean field MHD, we discuss the energetics of optically thin, two temperature, advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs). If the magnetic field is tangled and roughly isotropic, flux freezing is insufficient to maintain the field in equipartition with the gas. In this case, we expect a fraction of the energy generated by shear in the flow to be used to build up the magnetic field strengt...

Particle Heating by Alfvenic Turbulence in Hot Accretion Flows

Recent work on Alfvenic turbulence by Goldreich & Sridhar (1995; GS) suggests that the energy cascades almost entirely perpendicular to the local magnetic field. As a result, the cyclotron resonance is unimportant in dissipating the turbulent energy. Motivated by the GS cascade, we calculate the linear collisionless dissipation of Alfven waves with frequencies much less than the proton cyclotro...

Alfvénic Turbulence in the Extended Solar Corona: Kinetic Effects and Proton Heating

We present a model of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in the extended solar corona that contains the effects of collisionless dissipation and anisotropic particle heating. Recent observations have shown that preferential heating and acceleration of positive ions occur in the first few solar radii of the high-speed solar wind. Measurements made by the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer ab...

The Heating of Test Particles in Numerical Simulations of Alfvénic Turbulence

We study the heating of charged test particles in three-dimensional numerical simulations of weakly compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence (“Alfvénic turbulence”); these results are relevant to particle heating and acceleration in the solar wind, solar flares, accretion disks onto black holes, and other astrophysics and heliospheric environments. The physics of particle heating depen...

Turbulence in the Sub-alfvénic Solar Wind Driven by Reflection of Low-frequency Alfvén Waves

We study the formation and evolution of a turbulent spectrum of Alfvén waves driven by reflection off the solar wind density gradients, starting from the coronal base up to 17 solar radii, well beyond the Alfvénic critical point. The background solar wind is assigned and 2D shell models are used to describe nonlinear interactions. We find that the turbulent spectra are influenced by the nature ...
