Wayfinding swarm creatures exploring the 3D dynamic virtual worlds

چکیده
The use of 3D virtual worlds in the construction industry is not limited to simulation of building models. Whilst in a 3D virtual world, designers can view their work from various viewpoints by moving around. However explorations within these environments are not simple affairs due to the absence of many sensorial stimuli that exist in the physical world. Hence there needs to be a tool aiding designers to explore the world. We present a wayfinding aid based on a swarm model. The wayfinding creatures produce dynamic trails leading to desired destinations. We describe the swarm rules developed to create such behaviour in wayfinding creatures.

The use of 3D virtual worlds has spread rapidly in recent years. These worlds have various uses ranging from computer games to urban design simulation systems. However, the spread of 3D virtual worlds has been impeded due to the problem of users not being able to find their way in and around virtual worlds. Hence improving wayfinding has become a crucial area of research. As virtual worlds beco...
متن کاملTodd’s VisNotes Virtually Lost in Virtual Worlds - Wayfinding without a Cognitive Map
The virtual reality modeling language (VRML) [1] is quickly growing in use and popularity. VRML may help to push fast 3D graphics onto most desktops and into most homes within the next few years. But are people ready to browse virtual-worlds in the same way that they currently browse flatland web pages, and more importantly, are virtual-worlds and virtual-world browsers ready for people ? There...

This poster argues for an agent based approach to tackle difficulties users usually experience when navigating in large scale 3D computer virtual environments (CVEs). This view is examined from two different perspectives namely that of solitary and collaborative wayfinding.

Three-dimensional virtual worlds are multimedia, simulated environments, often managed over the Web, which users can ‘inhabit’ and interact via their own graphical, humanoid, self-representations known as ‘avatars’. 3D virtual worlds are being used in many applications: education/training, gaming, social networking, marketing and commerce. Second Life is the most widely used 3D virtual world in...
متن کامل3D Inhabited Virtual Worlds: Interactivity and Interaction between Avatars, Autonomous Agents, and Users
This paper addresses some of the central questions currently related to 3-Dimensional Inhabited Virtual Worlds (3D-IVWs), their virtual interactions, and communication, drawing from the theory and methodology of sociology, interaction analysis, interpersonal communication, semiotics, cultural studies, and media studies. First, 3D-IVWs--seen as a new and unique form of multimedia--are introduced...
