چکیده

Introduction Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT) is used to control the position of the patient based on internal body structures. Thereby, the CBCT data set is fitted to the planning CT image. The accuracy of this alignment process strongly depends on the quality of the CBCT images. The radiotherapy department of the cantonal hospital St.Gallen operates two Elekta Synergy linacs equipped with an integrated CBCT. One linac is equipped with a bowtie filter which reduces the dose originating from the body surface and, in this way, reduces image artefacts. It was the aim of the presented study to evaluate the influence of the bowtie filter on the image quality and the dose to the patient.

The influence of bowtie filtration on cone-beam CT image quality.

The large variation of x-ray fluence at the detector in cone-beam CT (CBCT) poses a significant challenge to detectors' limited dynamic range, resulting in the loss of skinline as well as reduction of CT number accuracy, contrast-to-noise ratio, and image uniformity. The authors investigate the performance of a bowtie filter implemented in a system for image-guided radiation therapy (Elekta onc...

An organ and effective dose study of XVI and OBI cone‐beam CT systems

The main purpose of this work was to quantify patient organ doses from the two kilovoltage cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems currently available on medical linear accelerators, namely the X-ray Volumetric Imager (XVI, Elekta Oncology Systems) and the On-Board Imager (OBI, Varian Medical Systems). Organ dose measurements were performed using a fiber-optic coupled (FOC) dosimetry syste...

Optimization of Radiation Dose in Cranial Computed Tomography among Adults: Assessment of Radiation Dose against Image Quality

Introduction: The rapid use of computed tomography (CT) scan is of great concern, due to increase in patients’ dose. Optimization of CT protocol is a vital issue in dose reduction. This study aimed to optimize radiation dose in cranial CT and assess modifications in image quality under radiation dose reduction. Material and Methods: A poly(me...

Investigating the effects of different kernels used for CT image reconstruction on dose distributions in treatment planning of kidney cancer radiotherapy

Introduction: The quality of CT images used for treatment planning of cancer patients is an important issue in accurate outlining of the tumor volume and organs at risk. Different kernels in CT scanner systems are available for improving the image quality. Applying these kernels  on   CT  images  will  change   the   CT  numbers  and  electron   density   of   tissues, conse...

An image quality comparison study between XVI and OBI CBCT systems

The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare image quality characteristics for two commonly used and commercially available CBCT systems: the X-ray Volumetric Imager and the On-Board Imager. A commonly used CATPHAN image quality phantom was used to measure various image quality parameters, namely, pixel value stability and accuracy, noise, contrast to noise ratio (CNR), high-contrast re...
