Redundancy Aware Topology Control in Wireless Sensor Networks

Extending the lifetime of wireless sensor networks remains the most challenging and demanding requirement that impede large scale deployments. Studies showed that considerable energy saving can be achieved only by putting a node’s radio into full sleep mode, therefore, topology control protocols showed to have the most potential in extending the network lifetime. In this paper we present RAT (Redundancy-Aware Topology control) protocol, RAT was designed and implemented with irregular underlying wireless channels in mind. Scalability and low overhead was the other primary design goals of RAT. In addition to RAT, we designed and implemented SCore (Sensor Core) to provide modular and elegant cross layer interface and coordination to fill the gap between RAT and other network services and protocols. We implemented and evaluated RAT and SCore using nesC/PowerTOSSIM. Compared to all active setting, RAT simulation results showed a total energy consumption decrease of 67% in a one to many routing scenario and up to 87% total energy saving in a many to one routing scenario.
