چکیده

We propose a methodology to match detailed BGP updates from two neighboring Autonomous Systems (ASes). This methodology allows us to characterize route propagation and measure the route propagation time. We apply this methodology to two months of all BGP updates from Abilene and GEANT to perform the first thorough characterization of BGP route propagation between two neighbor ASes. Our results show that the propagation time of BGP routing changes is very different depending on the network that initiates the routing change. This difference is due to engineering and connectivity issues such as the number of prefixes per BGP session, the number of BGP sessions per router, and BGP timer configurations.

Modeling as a necessary step for understanding Internet-wide route propagation

Most of the insight we have today about the Internet-wide route propagation comes from studies performed more than 5 years ago [1], [2], [3]. Since then, insight about the routing system has largely focused on the behavior of individual ASes [4], [5], [6], [7] or particular prefixes [8]. The way BGP routes propagate across the Internet, how fast, and whether BGP does it reasonably well are larg...

Constrained Route Distribution for Border Gateway Protocol/multiprotocol Label Switching (bgp/mpls) Internet Protcol (ip) Virtual Private Networks (vpns)

This document defines Multi-Protocol BGP (MP-BGP) procedures that allow BGP speakers to exchange Route Target reachability information. This information can be used to build a route distribution graph in order to limit the propagation of Virtual Private Network (VPN) Network Layer Reachability Information (NLRI) between different autonomous systems or distinct clusters of the same autonomous sy...

MPLS-BGP based LSP setup techniques

Internet routing is based on a distributed system composed of many routers, grouped into management domains called Autonomous Systems (ASes). Routing information is exchanged between ASes using Border Gateway Protocol. When BGP is used to distribute a particular route, it can be also be used to distribute an MPLS label which is mapped to that route. In this paper the comparison of conventional ...

Managing BGP Routes with a BGP Session Multiplexer

This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of BGP-Mux, a system for providing multiple clients access to a common set of BGP update streams from multiple BGP peers. By providing multiple clients access to the same set of BGP feeds, BGP-Mux facilitates many applications, including: (1) scalable, real-time monitoring of BGP update feeds; (3) new routing architectures that requ...
