Foliations with nonvanishing GV-class and gauge invariance

چکیده
In many aspects the most complicated foliated manifolds are those with nonvanishing Godbillon-Vey class. We argue that they probably do not appear in physics and that is due to gauge symmetry which prevents the foliation from becoming “too wild”; that means that the foliation does not develop resilient leaves which, at least in codim-1, by Duminy’s theorem are responsible for the appearence of nontrivial GV-class. PACS classification: 11.10.-z; 11.15.-q; 11.30.-Ly

Noncommutativity vs gauge symmetry

متن کاملLarge gauge invariance in non-Abelian finite temperature effective actions
We analyze large gauge invariance in the non-Abelian, finite temperature context and its physical consequences for D53 effective actions. After briefly reviewing the structure of bundles and large gauge transformations that arise in nonsimply connected 3-manifolds and gauge groups, we discuss their connections to Chern-Simons terms and Wilson-Polyakov loops. We then provide an invariant charact...
متن کاملLocal Prescribed Mean Curvature foliations in cosmological spacetimes
A theorem about local in time existence of spacelike foliations with prescribed mean curvature in cosmological spacetimes will be proved. The time function of the foliation is geometrically defined and fixes the diffeomorphism invariance inherent in general foliations of spacetimes. Moreover, in contrast to the situation of the more special constant mean curvature foliations, which play an impo...
متن کاملThe Generalized Peierls Bracket
We first extend the Peierls algebra of gauge invariant functions from the space S of classical solutions to the space H of histories used in path integration and some studies of decoherence. We then show that it may be generalized in a number of ways to act on gauge dependent functions on H. These generalizations (referred to as class I) depend on the choice of an “invariance breaking term,” wh...
متن کاملFinite Temperature and Large Gauge Invariance
Gauge theories are beautiful theories which describe physical forces in a natural manner and because of their rich structure, the study of gauge theories at nite temperature [1] is quite interesting in itself. However, to avoid getting into technicalities, we will not discuss the intricacies of such theories either at zero temperature or at nite temperature. Rather, we would study a particular ...
