and principal rock types (colors). (a) Reflectance. Maturity trends in norite (red) and mare (green) are indicated by solid (fresh), dashed (intermediate), and dotted (degraded) lines. (b) Scaled reflectance (same spectra as a). Spectra have been scaled (multiplicative) to unity at 750 nm. This scheme emphasizes trends in band strength and shape, which are apparent for all three suites of spectra. Band strength decreases with maturity in norite and mare, and generally with crater size (Figure 1) in central peaks. Fig. 1: NIN region. Base image is a Clementine 750 nm albedo image in a simple cylindrical projection. The northern portion of Imbrium basin is visible at the bottom of the image. Suites of small crater spectra analyzed are indicated by dots (green for mare, red for anorthositic norite (NIN)). Larger symbols indicate example spectra used in Figs. 2 & 3. Labels for these special craters are in white. The four large craters are indicated by triangles (central peak spectra). Their diameters in km are (west to east): 130 (Pythagoras), 59 (Carpenter), 70 (Philolaus), 50 (Anaxagoras). VARIATIONS WITHIN THE NORTHERN IMBRIUM NORITIC DEPOSITS. P. J. Isaacson and C. M. Northern Imbrium Noritic Anomaly

[1] An analysis of the Northern Imbrium Noritic (NIN) region was conducted using Clementine UVVIS multispectral images and derived band parameters. Band parameters were used to map spatial variations in composition and to aid in general separation of compositional signatures from effects such as maturity and topography. Compositional trends in which the abundance of mafic materials relative to ...

Gravity Observations of the Aristarchus Plateau on the Moon: Implications for the Volcanic and Impact Histories of the Plateau

Introduction The Aristarchus Plateau (Figure 1) is a distinctive, geologically complex volcanic highland in northern Oceanus Procellarum. It is roughly diamond shaped, 170 by 220 km across, and up to 2 km higher than the surrounding mare [1, 2]. The roughly linear edges of the plateau suggest that it is fault bounded. The plateau edges are essentially radial and concentric to the center of the ...

Mineralogy of the last lunar basalts: Results from Clementine

The last major phase of lunar volcanism produced extensive high-titanium mare deposits on the western nearside which remain unsampled by landing missions. The visible and near-infrared reflectance properties of these basalts are examined using Clementine multispectral images to better constrain their mineralogy. A much stronger 1 }am ferrous absorption was observed for the western high-titanium...

Radar probing of planetary regoliths: An example from the northern rim of Imbrium basin

[1] Imaging radar measurements at long wavelengths (e.g., >30 cm) allow deep (up to tens of meters) probing of the physical structure and dielectric properties of planetary regoliths. We illustrate a potential application for a Mars orbital synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using new Earth-based 70-cm wavelength radar data for the Moon. The terrae on the northern margin of Mare Imbrium, the Montes...

The case for a younger Imbrium basin: New 40Ar-39Ar ages of Apollo 14 rocks

Petrographically and chemically well-characterized rocks of the Apollo 14 landing site (12 impact melt breccias, 3 clast-free impact melt rocks, 2 granulitic rocks, 1 cataclastic noritic anorthosite, 1 shocked gabbronorite, 1 mare basalt, and 1 plagioclase single crystal) have been dated by the 40Ar-39Ar technique. The samples represent two different formations at the Apollo 14 site: (1) small ...
