Order reconstruction patterns in nematic liquid crystal wells

چکیده
We numerically study structural transitions inside shallow nanoscale wells with square cross-section, filled with nematic liquid crystal material. We model the wells within the Landau-de Gennes theory for nematic liquid crystals, in the absence of any external fields. We obtain two qualitatively different states: (i) the DSD state for relatively large wells with lateral dimension greater than a numerically computed critical threshold and (ii) a novel, two-dimensional star-like biaxial order reconstruction (OR) pattern called the WORS pattern, for wells smaller than the critical threshold. We define quantitative criteria for the onset of the WORS pattern in terms of the biaxiality parameter. We systematically study the dependence of the critical threshold, for the appearance of the WORS pattern, on the temperature and the anchoring strength on the lateral well surfaces.

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals
Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
متن کاملHomogeneous Biaxial Patterns and Director Instabilities of Liquid Crystal Polymers in Imposed Elongational Flows
We analyze the elongational-ow-driven Doi nematodynamic equations for spatially homogeneous nematic liquid crystal polymers (LCP). Following original studies by See, Doi and Larson 25], Bhave et al. 1], and Rey 23], the following results are provided: The order parameter (2-D) analysis of 23] is generalized to the full ve-component orientation tensor, revealing new, elongation-induced, director...
متن کاملA Molecular Theory of the Nematic to Nematic Phase Transition in Strongly Polar Compounds
As described in the previous chapter, the nematic (N) liquid crystal is characterised by a long range orientational order of the long axes of the molecules without a long range positional order of their centres of mass (see section 1.2.1, chapter-1). The preferred axis of orientation in the nematic liquid crystal, called the director, is represented by the unit vector n ^ . The extent of orient...
متن کاملConoscopic analysis of electric field driven planar aligned nematic liquid crystal.
This paper illustrates the conoscopic observation of a molecular reconstruction occurring across a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) medium in the presence of an external electric field. Conoscopy is an optical interferometric method, employed to determine the orientation of an optic axis in uniaxial crystals. Here a planar aligned NLC medium is used, and the topological changes with respect to vari...
متن کاملA computer simulation study of liquid crystal formation in asemi - exible system of linked hard spheresM
Results are reported for a molecular dynamics simulation study of a exible model mesogen composed of seven tangential spheres. We follow thèrattling spheres' method by which bonded atoms are constrained to lie within narrow potential wells. The dynamics of the system is that of a hard sphere uid with added constraints. The phase diagram of our model system is calculated as a function of density...
