Behavioral variability in the bacterial chemotaxis system arising from component localization

چکیده
— We perform a noise analysis of a simple push-pull network, accounting for the localization of substrate to a small fraction of the total cell volume. We find that this scheme can produce significantly higher levels of intracellular signaling noise than well-mixed models. We apply these results to the bacterial chemotaxis system and study its effect on information transmission, chemotactic performance and network robustness. These results may inform the study of a wide range of systems for which signaling noise could produce behaviorally significant effects.

Relationship between cellular response and behavioral variability in bacterial chemotaxis.
Over the last decades, bacterial chemotaxis in Escherichia coli has emerged as a canonical system for the study of signal transduction. A remarkable feature of this system is the coexistence of a robust adaptive behavior observed at the population level with a large fluctuating behavior in single cells [Korobkova E, Emonet T, Vilar JMG, Shimizu TS, Cluzel P (2004) Nature 428:574-578]. Using a u...

We present in vivo single-cell FRET measurements in the Escherichia coli chemotaxis 9 system that reveal pervasive signaling variability, both across cells in isogenic populations and 10 within individual cells over time. We quantify cell-to-cell variability of adaptation, ligand response, 11 as well as steady-state output level, and analyze the role of network design in shaping this diversity ...
متن کاملNoise-Induced Increase of Sensitivity in Bacterial Chemotaxis.
Flagellated bacteria, like Escherichia coli, can swim toward beneficial environments by modulating the rotational direction of their flagellar motors through a chemotaxis signal transduction network. The noise of this network, the random fluctuation of the intracellular concentration of the signal protein CheY-P with time, has been identified in studies of single cell behavioral variability, an...

متن کاملLarge increases in attractant concentration disrupt the polar localization of bacterial chemoreceptors.
In bacterial chemotaxis, the chemoreceptors [methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs)] transduce chemotactic signals through the two-component histidine kinase CheA. At low but not high attractant concentrations, chemotactic signals must be amplified. The MCPs are organized into a polar lattice, and this organization has been proposed to be critical for signal amplification. Although evidenc...
