چکیده

The formation dynamics of granular heaps in a vibrating bed is studied by a simple continuum model using the heap profile as the dynamical variable. Vibration increases the local height but is counter-balanced by the nonlinear coupling, which tends to suppress the growth of the height. The time evolution of the heap towards the steady state is obtained and it is demonstrated explicitly that the analytic result of the steady state profile is stable. Phenomena such as heap formation, downward and upward heaps can be reproduced. Our results agree with the experimentally observed change of downward to upward steady heaps as the vibration strength is increased. The effective current in the model is also computed and can be identified with the associated convection in the heap. The formation dynamics closely obey an exponential approach towards the steady state heap. Characteristic formation times are found to increase with the vibrational strength and the dependence on the system size is also explored.

Inelastic Continuum Modeling of Carbon Nanotube,s Behavior Using Finite Element Method

This paper describes a continuum model for analyzing the inelastic behavior of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) in different loading conditions. Because of limitations in using molecular dynamics (and other atomic methods) to model the failure load of the SWCNT, continuum mechanics methods are considered in this paper. Based on some experimental and theoretical results, an elasto-plastic...

Dynamics of Macro–Nano Mechanical Systems; Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method

The continuum based approaches don’t provide the correct physics in atomic scales. On the other hand, the molecular based approaches are limited by the length and simulated process time. As an attractive alternative, this paper proposes the Fixed Interfacial Multiscale Method (FIMM) for computationally and mathematically efficient modeling of solid structures. The approach is applicable to mult...

Design and Analysis of a Novel Tendon-less Backbone Robot

A new type of backbone robot is presented in this paper. The core idea is to use a cross shape mechanism with the principle of functioning of the scissors linkages, known as a pantograph. Although this continuum arm acts quite similar to tendon-driven robot, this manipulator does not include any tendon in its structure. This design does not suffer from the weaknesses of the continuum design suc...

Mechanisms of granular spontaneous stratification and segregation in two-dimensional silos

Spontaneous stratification of granular mixtures has been reported by Makse et al. @Nature ~London! 386, 379 ~1997!# when a mixture of grains differing in size and shape is poured in a quasi-two-dimensional heap. We study this phenomenon using two different approaches. First, we introduce a cellular automaton model that illustrates clearly the physical mechanism; the model displays stratificatio...

ON THE FORMATION OF STRAY GRAINS IN DIRECTIONALLY-SOLIDIFIED NI-BASED SUPERALLOYS WITH VARYING CROSS SECTIONS

Formation of stray grain defects particularly around re-entrant features of the turbine blade airfoils is one of the major problems in directional and single crystal solidification processes. In this work, directional solidification tests of the GTD-111 Ni-based superalloy were conducted at different withdrawal velocities of 3, 6 and 9 mm.min-1 using various stepped cylindrical and cubic design...
