The Unstable Spectrum of the Navier-stokes Operator in the Limit of Vanishing Viscosity

چکیده
A general class of linear advective PDEs, whose leading order term is of viscous dissipative type, is considered. It is proved that beyond the limit of the essential spectrum of the underlying inviscid operator, the eigenvalues of the viscous operator, in the limit of vanishing viscosity, converge precisely to those of the inviscid operator. The general class of PDEs includes the equations of incompressible fluid dynamics. Hence eigenvalues of the NavierStokes operator converge in the inviscid limit to the eigenvalues of the Euler operator beyond the essential spectrum.

On the Vanishing Viscosity Limit in a Disk
Let u be a solution to the Navier-Stokes equations in the unit disk with no-slip boundary conditions and viscosity ν > 0, and let u be a smooth solution to the Euler equations. We say that the vanishing viscosity limit holds on [0, T ] if u converges to u in L∞([0, T ];L). We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing viscosity limit to hold is the vanishing with the visco...
متن کاملUniform Regularity for the Navier-stokes Equation with Navier Boundary Condition
We prove that there exists an interval of time which is uniform in the vanishing viscosity limit and for which the Navier-Stokes equation with Navier boundary condition has a strong solution. This solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and has only one normal derivative bounded in L∞. This allows to get the vanishing viscosity limit to the incompressible Euler system from a s...
متن کاملLaminar and Turbulent Dissipation in Shear Flow with Suction
The rate of viscous energy dissipation in a shear layer of incompressible Newtonian fluid with injection and suction is studied by means of exact solutions, nonlinear and linearized stability theory, and rigorous upper bounds. For large enough values of the injection angle a steady laminar flow is nonlinearly stable for all Reynolds numbers, while for small but nonzero angles the laminar flow i...
متن کاملThe Vanishing Viscosity Limit in the Presence of a Porous Medium
We consider the flow of a viscous, incompressible, Newtonian fluid in a perforated domain in the plane. The domain is the exterior of a regular lattice of rigid particles. We study the simultaneous limit of vanishing particle size and distance, and of vanishing viscosity. Under suitable conditions on the particle size, particle distance, and viscosity, we prove that solutions of the Navier-Stok...

The rate of viscous energy dissipation in a shear layer of incompressible Newtonian fluid with injection and suction is studied by means of exact solutions, nonlinear and linearized stability theory, and rigorous upper bounds. The injection and suction rates are maintained constant and equal and this leads to solutions with constant throughput. For strong enough suction, expressed in terms of t...
