چکیده

6 This article provides an overview of the physical components that 7 tend to be common to all neural prosthetic systems. It emphasizes 8 the biophysical factors that constrain the sophistication of those 9 interfaces. Specific applications to neural prosthetic systems for 10 sensory replacement and motor control are covered in PROSTHET11 ICS, SENSORY SYSTEMS and PROSTHETICS, MOTOR CONTROL, re12 spectively. Electrical stimulation of the nervous system is also be13 ing used to treat other disorders; examples include spinal cord 14 stimulation to control pain and basal ganglia stimulation to control 15 parkinsonian dyskinesias.

NEUROPROSTHETIC INTERFACES – THE REALITY BEHIND BIONICS AND CYBORGS History and Definitions

The invisible and seemingly magical powers of electricity were employed as early as the ancient Greeks and Romans, who used shocks from electric fish to treat pain. More technological forms of electricity became a favorite of quack medical practitioners in the Victorian era (McNeal, 1977), an unfortunate tradition that persists to this day. In the 20th century the elucidation of neural signalin...

6 This article concerns sensory prostheses, in which information is 7 collected by electronic sensors and delivered directly to the nervous 8 system by electrical stimulation of pathways in or leading to the 9 parts of the brain that normally process a given sensory modality. 10 In principle, all of the senses could be replaced or even augmented 11 by such technology. In practice, only some sen...
