Shang Fa Yang: Pioneer in plant ethylene biochemistry
نویسنده
چکیده
Shang Fa Yang was born in Taiwan in 1932. After receiving his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Agricultural Chemistry from the National Taiwan University, he came to the United States in 1958 to pursue a Ph.D. degree at Utah State University. Following three postdoctoral years, he was hired at the University of California, Davis, in 1966 where he was a biochemist and professor for 28 years. After retiring early from UC Davis, he subsequently established a research program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and served as Vice President of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. Yang’s research achievements included discovering the biochemical pathway for the synthesis of ethylene by identifying the key steps by which S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is converted into 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) and subsequently into ethylene. Yang further demonstrated how the methylthio and ribose moieties from SAM were recycled back into methionine in order to sustain high rates of ethylene synthesis, as in ripening fruits. This recycling pathway is now known as the Yang Cycle. Yang also contributed to the isolation, characterization and cloning of ACC synthase and ACC oxidase, the two enzymes in the ethylene biosynthetic pathway, and to the elucidation of their structure and reaction mechanisms. He made important contributions to auxin, cytokinin, cyanide and sulfur metabolism in plants as well. His work formed the basis for subsequent research that has established ethylene as the most thoroughly characterized of the hormonal biosynthesis and signaling pathways in plants. # 2008 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Ethylene biosynthesis in relation to cyanide metabolism
Cyanide is a co-product of ethylene biosynthesis in higher plants via the ACC pathway. In certain physiological states, such as fruit ripening and flower senescence, and in many environmental conditions, such as flooding and chilling, ethylene biosynthesis is greatly induced. Cyanide is toxic to plants if it accumulates in plant tissues; however, during fruit ripening, the co-product cyanide is...
متن کاملEthylene is all around
The small and simple gaseous molecule ethylene (C2H4) is usually associated with ripening and senescence events in plants. Its effects have been known for ages (literally), and in the last century there have been some major breakthroughs in ethylene biology. These breakthroughs include the discovery that the molecule that hastened the ripening of fruits and caused growth distortions in plants w...
متن کاملPurification, characterization, and sequencing of a novel type of antimicrobial peptides, Fa-AMP1 and Fa-AMP2, from seeds of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.).
Novel antimicrobial peptides (AMP), designated Fa-AMP1 and Fa-AMP2, were purified from the seeds of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) by gel filtration on Sephadex G75, ion-exchange HPLC on SP COSMOGEL, and reverse-phase HPLC. They were basic peptides having isoelectric points of over 10. Fa-AMP1 and Fa-AMP2 had molecular masses of 3,879 Da and 3,906 Da on MALDI-TOF MS analysis, and thei...
متن کاملStress - induced Ethylene Production in the Ethylene - requiring Tomato Mutant
Ethylene synthesis in vegetative tisues is thought to be controlled by indoleacetic acid (IAA). However, ethylene synthesis in the diageotropka (dgt) mutant of tomato (Ly mkoaesc MIlL) was much less sensitive to IAA than In the norml variety (VFNS). Yet, mehanial wounding stimuted ethyne production by the mutant. The dgt tomato provides an opportunity to study the regulation of stress ethylene ...
متن کاملHemoglobin expression affects ethylene production in maize cell cultures.
The formation of ethylene under different O(2) concentrations and upon addition of nitric oxide (NO) donor, sodium nitroprusside (SNP), was determined using maize (Zea mays L.) cell lines over-expressing (Hb+) or down-regulating (Hb-) hypoxically inducible (class-1) hemoglobin (Hb). Under all treatments, ethylene levels in the Hb- line were 5 to 6.5 times the levels in Hb+ and four to five time...
