Tense, Aspect, and Argument Structure

چکیده
This paper is concerned with an intriguing difference between Japanese and English involving the progressive form be V-ing and the -te iru form as well as the passive constructions in the two languages. Some of the complex semantic properties of the -te iru construction in Japanese are discussed in Ogihara (1998), where I present a proposal to account for the multiple interpretations associated with this construction. This paper is a follow-up to this paper and attempts to present an improved proposal. In order to help the reader to understand my position, I shall start with a short description of the various interpretations associated with -te iru by comparing its behavior with that of the be V-ing form in English. Vendler (1957) establishes four aspectual classes of verbs and characterizes them as in (1).

The Syntactic Expression of Tense Tim Stowell
2 Abstract In this article I defend the view that many central aspects of the semantics of tense are determined by independently-motivated principles of syntactic theory. I begin by decomposing tenses syntactically into a temporal ordering predicate (the true tense, on this approach) and two time-denoting arguments corresponding to covert a reference time (RT) argument and an eventuality time (...
متن کاملArgument Optionality in the LinGO Grammar Matrix
We present a library of implemented HPSG analyses for argument optionality based on typological studies of this phenomenon in the world’s languages, developed in the context of a grammar customization system that pairs a crosslinguistic core grammar with extensions for non-universal phenomena on the basis of user input of typological properties. Our analyses are compatible with multiple interse...
متن کاملConcept-based Instruction and Teaching English Tense and Aspect to Iranian School Learners
The present study examines the role of Gal’perin’s Concept-based Instruction (CBI) as a pedagogical approach in teaching cognitive grammar-based (CG-based) concepts of tense and aspect to EFL students. Following the sociocultural theory of L2 Acquisition (SCT), arming L2 learners with scientific concepts can lead to L2 development by deepening their understanding and raising awareness of L2 str...
متن کاملVerbs in Applied Linguistics Research Article Introductions: Semantic and syntactic analysis
This study aims to investigate the semantic and syntactic features of verbs used in the introduction section of Applied Linguistics research articles published in Iranian and international journals. A corpus of 20 research article introductions (10 from each journal) was used. The corpus was analysed for the syntactic features (tense, aspect and voice) and semantic meaning of verbs. The finding...
متن کاملThe Effects of Systemic-Theoretical Instruction on Developing Iranian EFL Learners’ Explicit and Implicit Knowledge of Tense-Aspect System
This study aimed to investigate the effects of Systemic Theoretical Instruction (STI), grounded in Socio-cultural Theory and proposed by Gal’perin, on developing Iranian EFL learners’ knowledge of English tense-aspect system. To this end, two low-intermediate classes, including 24 and 21 language learners aged between 12-19, were taught the distinction between simple past and present perfect te...
متن کاملTense beyond the Verb: Encoding Clausal Tense/aspect/mood on Nominal Dependents
It is generally held that clausal temporal, aspectual and modal features, when encoded morphologically, are expressed by or on clausal heads. However nominals and modifiers within NP can also be inflected for tense, aspect and modal features interpreted with respect to the clausal predication rather than with respect to the nominal argument itself. Such nominals (and dependents within NP) there...
