چکیده

A pulsed source of positrons has been developed which may be useful for antihydrogen (Iq) formation because it is portable when compared to accelerator-based sources. This positron accumulator uses a Penning-style trap to collect moderated positrons from a radioactive source. The positron pulses may be emitted with repetition rates in the range of 50-1000 Hz, which is appropriate for I:I production schemes involving laser-induced recombination. Bunching techniques may be used to vary the width of the positron pulses over the range 30-120 ns (FWHM) to match the width of the antiproton and/or laser pulses. The efficiency of the accumulator increases from ~ 10% at 100 Hz to ~ 50% at I000 Hz. At 250 Hz the efficiency is ,-, 25% and the accumulator has delivered up to 8 e +/pulse per mCi of positron activity. This translates into ,-~ 1.2 x 10 s e+/pulse for a 100 Ci SgCo source.

Antimatter transport processes

A comparison of the 1S-2S transitions of hydrogen and antihydrogen will yield a stringent test of CPT conservation. Necessarily, the antihydrogen atoms need to be trapped to perform high precision spectroscopy measurements. Therefore, an approximately 0.75 T deep neutral atom trap, equivalent to about 0.5 K for ground state (anti)hydrogen atoms, has been superimposed on a Penning-Malmberg trap ...

Transient Antihydrogen Production in a Paul Trap

Although positrons and antiprotons have vastly different masses, we show that it is possible to store both particle species simultaneously in a Paul trap, using the space charge of the positron cloud as a trap for the antiprotons. Computer simulations confirm the validity of this new trapping mechanism. In addition, the simulations show transient antihydrogen production that manifests itself in...

Simulation of the formation of antihydrogen

Detailed simulations of antihydrogen formation have been performed under the conditions of the ATHENA experiment, using several densities of the positron plasma in the range ne = 5 × 1013 m−3 to 1015 m−3. The simulations include only collisional effects, typically resulting in the formation of weakly bound antihydrogen via the three-body process, e+ + e+ + p → H + e+. (Radiative processes, whic...

Spatial distribution of cold antihydrogen formation.

Antihydrogen is formed when antiprotons are mixed with cold positrons in a nested Penning trap. We present experimental evidence, obtained using our antihydrogen annihilation detector, that the spatial distribution of the emerging antihydrogen atoms is independent of the positron temperature and axially enhanced. This indicates that antihydrogen is formed before the antiprotons are in thermal e...

Antihydrogen trapping assisted by sympathetically cooled positrons

Antihydrogen, the bound state of an antiproton and a positron, is of interest for use in precision tests of natureʼs fundamental symmetries. Antihydrogen formed by carefully merging cold plasmas of positrons and antiprotons has recently been trapped in magnetic traps. The efficiency of trapping is strongly dependent on the temperature of the nascent antihydrogen, which, to be trapped, must have...
