IRAM observations of JVAS/CLASS gravitational lenses

چکیده
We have searched for molecular absorption lines at millimeter wavelengths in eleven gravitational lens systems discovered in the JVAS/CLASS surveys of flat spectrum radio sources. Spectra of only one source 1030+074 were obtained in the 3-, 2and 1.3-millimeter band at the frequencies corresponding to common molecular transitions of CO and HCO as continuum emission was not found in any of the other sources. We calculated upper limits to the column density in molecular absorption for 1030+074, using an excitation temperature of 15 K, to be NCO < 6.3 × 10 cm−2 and NHCO+ < 1.3 × 10 cm−2, equivalent to hydrogen column density of the order NH < 10 cm−2, assuming standard molecular abundances. We also present the best upper limits of the continuum at the lower frequency for the other 10 gravitational lenses.

N ov 1 99 6 The Flat Spectrum Radio Luminosity Function
The number of lenses found in the JVAS survey of flat-spectrum radio sources for gravitational lenses is consistent with statistical models of optical surveys for lensed quasars. The 90% confidence limit on Ω 0 in flat cosmological models (Ω 0 + λ 0 = 1) is approximately 0.15 < ∼ Ω 0 < ∼ 2. Depending on the RLF model, we predict 2.4 to 3.6 lenses in the JVAS survey and in the first part of the ...

The JVAS (Jodrell Bank-VLA Astrometric Survey) and CLASS (Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey) are well-defined surveys containing about ten thousand flat-spectrum radio sources. For many reasons, flat-spectrum radio sources are particularly well-suited as a population from which one can obtain unbiased samples of gravitational lenses. These are by far the largest gravitational (macro)lens surveys, and ...

In a recent paper, Hawkins (1997) argues on the basis of statistical studies of double-image gravitational lenses and lens candidates that a large population of dark lenses exists and that these outnumber galaxies with more normal mass-to-light ratios by a factor of 3:1. If correct, this is a very important result for many areas of astronomy including galaxy formation and cosmology. In this pap...

The relative frequency of four-image gravitational lens systems is an excellent tool for testing assumptions regarding the characteristic flattening of galaxy mass distributions. Using a sample of sixteen radio-loud gravitational lenses from the JVAS/CLASS survey and assuming the statistically negligible external shears predicted by the galaxy-galaxy correlation function, the hypothesis that th...

Spiral galaxies as oblate gravitational lenses. ABSTRACT We present the relation between the density distribution of the oblate isothermal mass distribution, characterised by a rotation velocity, core radius and oblateness, and the corresponding line-of-sight (LOS) surface mass distribution. We find that a correct treatment of the inclination of an oblate mass distribution can have large conseq...
