چکیده

Electron transport rate (ETR) calculations require values of irradiance, effective quantum yield of chlorophyll fluorescence (DF=F0 m), the distribution of energy between PSII and PSI and leaf-specific photosynthetic absorptance. We conducted virtually simultaneous replicated measurements of diel changes in DF=F0 m of Posidonia australis in situ, and determined leaf-specific photosynthetic absorptance in vivo using integrating spheres. Leaf-specific non-photosynthetic and photosynthetic absorptance, corrected for spectral reflectance, comprised 16 and 68% of total spectral absorptance (84%); about 7% of photosynthetically active radiation incident on the leaves was reflected. Virtually simultaneous quantum-yield measurements of eight short shoots provided an estimate of amongsample variability in DF=F0 m: generally the standard deviation was 10% of the mean except for a few hours around midday when the variability rose to 25% of the mean. Our results indicate that leaf-specific non-photosynthetic absorptance, spectral reflectance and shoot-to-shoot variability need to be taken into account when estimating ETR in the field. # 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Importance of within-shoot epiphyte distribution for the carbon budget of seagrasses: the example of Posidonia oceanica

To assess the effects of shading by epiphytes on the carbon balance of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, we examined the patterns of within-shoot epiphyte abundance on leaves, and their variability with season and depth. Epiphyte biomass was found to depend on leaf age (larger epiphyte load on older tissues), leaf side (more epiphytes on the inner face than on the outer) and depth (more epiphyte...

13C and 15N translocation within and among shoots in two Posidonia species from Western Australia

Translocation of 13C and 15N was investigated at the spatial scales of within-shoot (i.e. the seagrass clonal unit including leaves and associated vertical rhizome) and among-shoots in a mixed meadow of Posidonia sinuosa and P. australis. Incubation with 13C and 15N was conducted in either the oldest leaf of a shoot (i.e. within-shoot scale) or in the first shoot on the 4th or 5th branch of the...

Genotypic richness predicts phenotypic variation in an endangered clonal plant.

Declines in genetic diversity within a species can affect the stability and functioning of populations. The conservation of genetic diversity is thus a priority, especially for threatened or endangered species. The importance of genetic variation, however, is dependent on the degree to which it translates into phenotypic variation for traits that affect individual performance and ecological pro...

Comparison of feeding value of a treated sea plant, Posidonia australis, with lucerne, pasture and wheat

An experiment was carried out to compare the effect of feeding posidonia australis as a non-conventional feedstuff with cereal straw for sheep maintenance; and to compare seagrass/chicken litter with lucerne hay and pasture for sheep production on a scale such as would be applicable to lot-feeding of sheep in the area of suthern Australia in case of short term feed scarcity. To approach this ta...

Water Relations of Seagrasses: STATIONARY VOLUMETRIC ELASTIC MODULUS AND OSMOTIC PRESSURE OF THE LEAF CELLS OF HALOPHILA OVALIS, ZOSTERA CAPRICORNI, AND POSIDONIA AUSTRALIS.

The stationary volumetric elastic modulus (epsilon(s)) of the leaf cells of three seagrasses (Halophila ovalis (R.Br.) Hook, Zostera capricorni Aschers, and Posidonia australis Hook f.) was evaluated from estimates of epsilon(s) plus intracellular osmotic pressure (epsilon(s) + II(i)) and II(i). The estimates of (epsilon(s) + II(i)) were made using a linear displacement transducer to measure ve...
