A method for predicting stressed words in English jazz chants

چکیده
To acquire a second language, one must develop an ear and tongue for the correct stress and intonation patterns of that language. In English language teaching, there is an effective method called Jazz Chants for working on the sound system. In this paper, we propose a method for predicting stressed words, which play a crucial role in Jazz Chants. The proposed method is specially designed for stress prediction in Jazz chants. It exploits several sources of information including words, POSs, sentence types, and the constraint on the number of stressed words in a chant text. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves an -measure of 0.936 and outperforms the other methods implemented for comparison. The proposed method is expected to be useful in supporting non-native teachers of English when they teach chants to students and create chant texts with stress marks from arbitrary texts.

Using electro-encephalography (EEG), brain activation of Japanese learners of English (JLE) was observed when rhythm instruction material (RIM) modified from Jazz Chants and including beat sound was conducted on a treatment group (Beat G.), an another type of RIM not including beat sound was conducted on a contrast group (No-beat G.). During rhythm learning, proficiency in rhythm (PR) was exami...
متن کاملEvaluation of syllable stress using single class classifier
Evaluation of syllable stress in speech utterances is an important and challenging task in the area of speaker evaluation. In this paper, we propose a method to classify correct utterances of English words based on the evaluation of the lexical syllable stress pattern. Here we use only correctly stressed utterances of the words as training samples since a statistically significant pool of incor...
متن کاملThe strong/weak syllable distinction in English.
Strong and weak syllables in English can be distinguished on the basis of vowel quality, of stress, or of both factors. Critical for deciding between these factors are syllables containing unstressed unreduced vowels, such as the first syllable of automata. In this study 12 speakers produced sentences containing matched sets of words with initial vowels ranging from stressed to reduced, at norm...
متن کاملLearning to Learn: Infants’ Acquisition of Stress-Based Strategies for Word Segmentation
A majority of English words are stressed on their first syllable. Infants use stress as a cue to word segmentation, but it is unclear how infants discover the correlation between stress and word boundaries. We exposed English-learning infants to a list of words stressed on their second syllable to discover whether infants can learn a new relation between stress and word boundaries. English-lear...
