Multi-view Cloud-top Height and Wind Retrieval with Photogrammetric Methods: Application to Meteosat-8 Hrv Observations

چکیده
The height assignment of atmospheric motion vectors (AMV) is still an open issue. From the numerous height assignment techniques, each retrieval method has its own characteristics. The presented stereophotogrammetric method has the advantage that it is only dependent on the geometry and therefore offers a completely independent height retrieval compared to the other methods. As polar-orbiting instrument, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) onboard EOS-Terra is used. With its nine viewing angles, it offers simultaneous cloud-top height (CTH) and wind (CTW) retrieval from at least three non-symmetric cameras. The operational Meteosat satellites (M5, M7 and M8) allow geostationary stereo height retrievals within the overlap area over the Indian Ocean and East Africa. In addition to the M5/M7 combination, the new combination M5/M8 HRV is analyzed with our photogrammetric methods. Two examples of coincident MISR, Meteosat-5, -7 and -8 HRV data over the Indian Ocean and East Africa are shown. The stereo-photogrammetric CTH and CTW results from MISR, Meteosat-5/-7 and Meteosat-5/-8 HRV are then compared with the operational NASA-JPL MISR L2TC product.

Stereo cloud-top height retrieval with ASTER and MISR
The combined multi-view photogrammetric retrieval of cloud-top height (CTH) from the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) and the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is discussed. Although ASTER was designed mainly for land applications, the synergistic use of MISR and ASTER is shown to be valuable for 3D cloud analysis. A new cloud-adapted matching al...

Geometric cloud height estimation provides an alternative to cloud top temperature methods if two satellites view the same cloud. First we demonstrate the stereo cloud height derivation with a combination of Meteosat 7 and Meteosat 5 5 km resolution Infrared data. Comparison with the temperature technique shows consistency in the majority of the clouds, but some differences. This demonstrates t...

متن کاملStereoscopic Estimation of Volcanic Ash Cloud-Top Height from Two Geostationary Satellites
The characterization of volcanic ash clouds released into the atmosphere during explosive eruptions includes cloud height as a fundamental physical parameter. A novel application is proposed of a method based on parallax data acquired from two geostationary instruments for estimating ash cloud-top height (ACTH). An improved version of the method with a detailed discussion of height retrieval ac...

The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) is a part of the payload for NASA’s Terra spacecraft launched in December 1999. The MISR instrument continuously acquires a systematic, global, multi-angle imagery in reflected sunlight in order to support and improve studies of the Earth ecology and climate. This paper focuses on the photogrammetric aspect of the data production and discusses qu...
