Vortex Sheet Computations: Roll-Up, Wakes, Separation
نویسنده
چکیده
Chorin's vortex blob method has been proposed as a way to extend vortex sheet motion past the singularity formation time, into the physically important roll-up regime. Basic questions are: 1. Does the vortex blob method converge to an infinite spiral as the smoothing parameter tends to zero? 2. Do vortex blob computations approximate real fluid motion? This paper will present and discuss three computations which are relevant to these issues: a) periodic roll-up, b) wake patterns in a thin soap film, c) separation at a sharp edge.

متن کاملVortex Sheet Roll-up Due to the Motion of a Flat Plate
The vortex-blob method is extended to compute vortex sheet separation at a sharp edge. A smoothing parameter con trols the amount of detail occuring in the rolled-up spiral. Cal culations are presented for the case of vortex sheet roll-up due to an impulsively started flat plate.
متن کاملEvolution of a Cylindrical and a Spherical Vortex Sheet
Point vortex and vortex blob computations are used to investigate the evolution of the planar and the axisymmetric vortex sheet which initially induce ow past a cylinder and past a sphere respectively. In both cases the sheet develops a singularity at two points in the symmetry plane at a nite time. It rolls up at these points forming a vortex pair in the planar case and a vortex ring in the ax...
متن کاملComputation of Vortex Sheet Roll-up
In this article we shall review some recent developments for computing vortex sheet roll-up. A vortex sheet is an asymptotic model of a free shear layer in which the transition region between the two fluid streams is approximated by a surface across which the tangential velocity component is discontinuous. A common theme in fluid dynamics is that the vortex sheet model can be useful in understa...
متن کاملSimulation of vortex sheet roll-up: chaos, azimuthal waves, ring merger
This article reviews some recent simulations of vortex sheet roll-up using the vortex blob method. In planar and axisymmetric flow, the roll-up is initially smooth but irregular small-scale features develop later in time due to the onset of chaos. A numerically generated Poincaré section shows that the vortex sheet flow resembles a chaotic Hamiltonian system with resonance bands and a heterocli...
