چکیده

We observe the phenomenon of the Faraday-like effect, which occurs in periodically poled lithium niobate with odd number of domains (OPPLN) by the transverse electro-optic (EO) effect under the quasi-phase-matching condition. In this case, light rotates in the reverse sense during the forward and the backward path, and OPPLN shows a nonreciprocal process that is similar to the magneto-optical Faraday effect, which has served as a routine method for achieving optical isolation. Therefore, a feasible scheme for an EO optical isolator based on the Faraday-like effect by adding an additional semi-domain to OPPLN is also proposed in this article. © 2014 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (130.3730) Lithium niobate; (230.2090) Electro-optical devices; (230.2240) Faraday effect. http://dx.doi.org/10.1364/JOSAB.31.000730

Optical isolator based on the electro-optic effect in periodically poled lithium niobate with the addition of a half domain.

We propose an optical isolator based on the electro-optic (EO) effect of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). When the EO effect occurs in PPLN under a TE field, each domain serves as a half-wave plate under the quasi-phase-matching condition, and PPLN shows optical activity similar to quartz. The introduction of an additional half-domain to the normal PPLN changes the incident azimuth an...

Šolc-type wavelength filters based on TE↔TM mode conversion utilizing periodically poled Ti-diffused lithium-niobate channel waveguides

We have demonstrated the Šolc-type wavelength filters in a 52mm long periodically poled Ti diffused lithium niobate channel waveguide which has a domain period of 16.6μm. At room temperature, the center wavelength and the full-width at half maximum of the filter were about 1272.49nm and 0.23nm, respectively. The nearest side-lobe is about 7dB. New structure of optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM...

Generation of narrow-band terahertz radiation via optical rectification of femtosecond pulses in periodically poled lithium niobate

We demonstrate a promising technique for generating narrow-band terahertz electromagnetic radiation. Femtosecond optical pulses are propagated through a periodically poled lithium-niobate crystal, where the domain length is matched to the walk-off length between the optical and THz pulses. The bandwidth of the THz wave forms is 0.11 at 1.7 THz. Optical rectification gives rise to a THz wave for...
