I N T R O D U C T I O N Saxi toxin (STX) and te t rodotoxin ( T T X ) are small organic molecules tha t specificially block sodium channels in m a n y exci table membranes . T h e physical chemical propert ies o f the receptor for S T X and T T X have been s tudied in bo th electrophysiological exper iments and in b ind ing exper iments with rad io labe led toxins. Earl ier results revealed s t rong similarities be tween the propert ies of the toxin receptor and o f the conduc tance o f open sodium channels; for example , bo th toxin b inding and sodium co n d u c t an ce were blocked by protons at p H 5.2-5.4, by calcium ions, and by thal lous ions (Co lquhoun et al., 1972; Hender son et al., 1973 and 1974; Hille, 1968 b, Woodhul l , 1973). Saxitoxin binding in nerves from walking legs of the lobster Homarus americanus. Two classes of receptors

The binding of exchange-labeled saxitoxin (STX) to sodium channels has been investigated in the nonmyelinated fibers of the walking leg nerves of the lobster. The properties of the STX binding site differed systematically among the nerves from different walking legs. The equilibrium dissociation constant for STX binding (KSTX) to the front legs is approximately twice that for the binding to the...

Chemosensitivity of Walking Legs of the Lobster Homarus Americanus: Neurophysiological Response Spectrum and Thresholds

Responses of chemoreceptors in the walking legs of the lobster Homarus americanus to 35 individual compounds and 3 mixtures (prey odours and extracts) were studied using extracellular recording techniques. Compared against a standard mussel (Mytilus edulis) extract, these receptors were most sensitive to the amino acids L-glutamate, hydroxy-L-proline, L-aspartate, L-arginine, glycine, taurine, ...

Kinematics, hydrodynamics and force production of pleopods suggest jet-assisted walking in the American lobster (Homarus americanus).

The American lobster (Homarus americanus) displays a diverse set of locomotory behaviours that includes tail flips, walking and paddling. Paddling is carried out by the four pairs of paddle-shaped pleopods on the ventral abdomen. Although it is recognized that pleopod-generated fluid flows have some locomotory role in adults, reports on their relative importance in locomotion are inconsistent. ...

Bidirectional propagation of Action potentials

In this project we invectigated bidirectional propagation of action potentials in giant axon of lobster Homarus americanus. We found an asymetrical propagation in the giant axons from the first two walking legs, which have claws. The backpropagating antidromic action potential decreases the conduction velocity when we increase the stimulation voltage, while the forward propagating (orthodromic)...

Fine structure and organization of nerve fibers and giant axons in Homarus americanus.

The walking leg nerves of lobster Homarus americanus have been utilized for many years in neurophysiological and pharmacological studies of the nervous system (for a review of the literature see references 1 and 10). These nerves have been particularly useful because they contain giant axons 75-100/z in diameter which can be isolated easily. The giant axons have been employed extensively in per...
