Hormone Production in Endocrine Tumours

HORMONE PRODUCTION IN ENDOCRINE TUMOURS. Ciba Foundation Colloquia on Endocrinology, Vol. 12. G.E.W. Wolstenholme and Maeve O'Connor, Eds. Boston, Little, Brown and Company, 1958. 351 pp. $9.00. This volume is the twelfth in the series of Ciba Foundation Colloquia on Endocrinology, and included in this book is an index to all twelve volumes. According to the preface these published proceedings of small informal conferences are "intended for a world-wide readership, especially in regions where recent and adequately representative literature is difficult to come by," and it may fairly be said that in this new publication these aims have been amply fulfilled. The international flavor is exemplified by the origins of the participants, ranging from Bombay to Kansas. The first two contributions deal with experimental induction of functioning pituitary tumours in mice, rats, and hamsters. Out of this work arises the interesting possibility that monomorphous pituitary tumours may one day be grown in vitro as a source of tropic hormones. Next Dr. Tata discourses on the interesting finding of an iodinated protein-distinct from thyroglobulin-in the plasma of nearly 60 per cent of cases of untreated thyroid carcinoma, in addition to the normally occurring thyroxine, triiodothyronine, and inorganic iodide. Dr. Dorfman reviews the ways in which studies of human tumour slices incubated with steroids have thrown light on androgen, estrogen, and corticoid biosynthesis. A refreshing analysis of clinical adrenal abnormalities is made by Dr. Alice Robinson and her co-workers from St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London. The positive significance of grossly elevated levels of urinary 17-ketosteroids and 3,8-hydroxy-17-ketosteroids in indicating an adrenal tumour is reaffirmed, as well as the fact that normal levels do not exclude it. Opinion seems to be hardening that "idiopathic hirsuties" may represent a biochemical abnormality intermediate in severity between the normal state and frank virilism. Cortisone reduces the 17-ketosteroid excretion to normal in these patients and restores menstruation, without, however, affecting the hirsuties. A pair of clinical papers comes from Dr. Hamburger of Copenhagen, who analyses the excretion of chorionic and hypophysial gonadotropins in malignant testis tumours, and of chorionic gonadotropins in cases of hydatidiform mole and chorionepithelioma of the uterus. Chromaffin and islet-cell tumours, as well as cysts and granulosa-cell tumours of the ovary, are all discussed, and it is clear that adequate coverage of the endocrine field has been achieved. Considering the specialised nature of the material at first sight, it is surprising how much there is of interest, if not of value, to general physicians.

Secretion of neuron-specific enolase, prolactin, growth hormone, luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone by "functionless" and endocrine-active pituitary tumours in vitro.
Secretion of the neuroendocrine marker neuron-specific enolase by 24 pituitary tumours was measured in maintenance tissue culture. Eleven endocrine-active and 13 "functionless" tumours were defined by measurement of prolactin, growth hormone, luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion rates in vitro and the corresponding plasma hormone levels. Measurement of prola...

Neuroendocrine tumours are a heterogeneous group including, for example, carcinoid, gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, pituitary tumours, medullary carcinoma of the thyroid and phaeochromocytomas. They have attracted much attention in recent years, both because they are relatively easy to palliate and because they have indicated the chronic effect of the particular hormone elevated....
متن کاملSomatostatin-receptor mediated diagnosis and treatment in gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NET's).
Neuroendocrine tumours constitute a group of tumours that originate from neuroendocrine cells throughout the body. That includes endocrine tumours of the thymus, lung, pancreas and gastrointestinal tract. Neuroendocrine gastrointestinal tumours have classically been divided into carcinoid tumours and endocrine pancreatic tumours. Many of these tumours produce hormones that can induce clinical s...
متن کاملProspects for the treatment of endocrine-responsive tumours.
Much has been achieved over the last 30 years to improve the treatment of hormone-dependent cancer of the breast, ovary and prostate. The development of the antioestrogen tamoxifen (Nolvadex) spear-headed a range of drugs that counter the growth-promoting action of the female and male sex steroid hormones. An important additional benefit of endocrine therapies has been their low toxicity compar...
متن کاملSecretion of hypothalamic and pituitary hormones by non-endocrine tumours.
That non-endocrine cancers can produce clinical syndromes of apparent hormone excess has been known for some time (Rees and Ratcliffe, 1974). Now there is ample clinical and biocheinical evidence that many polypeptide hormones may be produced and released by human tumours which originate in tissues which are not normally regarded as sites for the physiological production of the hormones. In som...
متن کاملImmunocytochemical study of 18 tumours causing ectopic Cushing's syndrome.
Eighteen cases of Cushing's syndrome caused by ectopic production of peptide hormones were investigated by histological and immunocytochemical methods and the findings correlated with clinical and biochemical observations. Immunocytochemistry showed immunoreactive adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) or peptides derived from the ACTH precursor (pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC], or both, in a total of...
