Quantum effects in gravitational wave signals from cuspy superstrings

چکیده
Abstract We study the gravitational emission, in Superstring Theory, from fundamental strings exhibiting cusps. The classical computation of the gravitational radiation signal from cuspy strings features strong bursts in the special null directions associated to the cusps. We perform a quantum computation of the gravitational radiation signal from a cuspy string, as measured in a gravitational wave detector using matched filtering and located in the special null direction associated to the cusp. We study the quantum statistics (expectation value and variance) of the measured filtered signal and find that it is very sharply peaked around the classical prediction. Ultimately, this result follows from the fact that the detector is a low-pass filter which is blind to the violent high-frequency quantum fluctuations of both the string worldsheet Xμ(τ, σ), and the incoming gravitational field hin μν(x).

The aim of these lectures is to give an introduction to several topics which lie at the intersection of string theory, gravity theory and gravity phenomenology. One successively reviews: (i) the “membrane” approach to the dissipative dynamics of classical black holes, (ii) the current experimental tests of gravity, and their theoretical interpretation, (iii) some aspects of the string-inspired ...
متن کاملA Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves
Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...
متن کاملEnergy Radiation by Cosmic Superstrings in Brane Inflation
The dominant method of energy loss by a loop of cosmic D-strings in models of warped brane inflation is studied. It is shown that the energy loss via Ramond-Ramond field radiation can dominate by many orders of magnitude over the energy radiation via gravitational wave emission. The ratio of these two energy loss mechanisms depends on the energy scale of inflation, the mass scale of string theo...

1 Summary The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) is a consortium of astronomers whose goal is the creation of a galactic scale gravitational wave observatory sensitive to gravitational waves in the nHz – µHz band. It is just one component of an international collaboration involving similar organizations of European and Australian astronomers who share the sa...

In this paper, by using a quantum hydrodynamic plasma model which incorporates the important quantum statistical pressure and electron diffraction force, we present the corrected plasmon dispersion relation for graphene which includes a k quantum term arising from the collective electron density wave interference effects (which is integer and constant and k is wave vector). The longitudinal ...
