Irony and metarepresentation

چکیده
This paper considers how two recent accounts of verbal irony – the pretence account and the echoic account – can explain a range of experimental results on the nature of irony and the differences between irony and metaphor. Of particular interest is the fact that irony comprehension correlates with success in standard second-order falsebelief tasks, and therefore requires a higher order of metarepresentational ability than metaphor comprehension. I consider two interpretations of what these tasks reveal – the standard mindreading account and a more recent epistemic account proposed by Mascaro and Sperber (2007, in press), and argue that the data on irony comprehension tend to support the epistemic rather than the mindreading account.

Represented speech and thought and auctorial irony: ambiguity and metarepresentation in literature
In this paper, I want to discuss one type of “pragmatic ambiguity”, i.e. utterances of which it is not clear whether they are sentences of narration or represented speech and thought. Through the discussion of these examples, I will introduce a few notions which seem to me important for the analysis of represented speech and thought, notably the notion of metarepresentation. I will then turn to...
متن کاملIs Verbal Irony Special?
The way we speak can reveal much about what we intend to communicate, but the words we use often only indirectly relate to the meanings we wish to convey. Verbal irony is a commonly studied form of indirect speech in which a speaker produces an explicit evaluative utterance that implicates an unstated, opposing evaluation. Producing and understanding ironic language, as well as many other types...
متن کاملMetacognition and metarepresentation: is a self-directed theory of mind a precondition for metacognition?
Metacognition is often defined as thinking about thinking. It is exemplified in all the activities through which one tries to predict and evaluate one’s own mental dispositions, states and properties for their cognitive adequacy. This article discusses the view that metacognition has metarepresentational structure. Properties such as causal contiguity, epistemic transparency and procedural refl...
متن کاملThe Semantics and Pragmatics of Metarepresentation in English: A Relevance-Theoretic Approach
This thesis deals with the nature of metarepresentation in language. It proposes linguistic-semantic and pragmatic analyses of a variety of metarepresentational expressions in English, using the framework of relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995). The main aim is to deepen the relevance-theoretic analysis of metarepresentation, to apply it to a range of data which have not been previou...

Irony is a type of diction that is used nearly equivalent to current literary idioms such as comic rhetorical question, metaphor, antanagoge, blaming, comical allusion, sarcasm, mockery and punning. In other words irony is the amusing or strange aspect of a situation that is very different from what we expect, or the use of words that say the opposite of what we really mean. This kind of dict...
