چکیده

Fault reactivation plays a fundamental role in the generation of plate tectonics from mantle convection. Converging and transform plate margins are mechanically weak due to both preexisting faults and preserved shear zones within the crust and lithosphere, on the one hand, and continuous brittle failure of lithosphere, on the other hand. Transform margins are the site for nucleating new converging margins. Lithospheric earthquakes demonstrate that oceanic lithosphere within a trench can deform as fast as the upper mantle. Models demonstrate that faulted converging plate margins contribute to producing plate tectonic-like motion. Preexisting faults and a power law plastic rheology dynamically interact and together give rise to plate-like motion. Faults have an important influence over outer rise and trench topography and by comparing models with observations, interplate stress is about 10-30 MPa. Subduction can initiate on preexisting faults when interplate coupling is as high as 10-30 MPa if the oceanic plate already has slabs attached to it as was the case for the Pacific plate when the Marianas nucleated . Modeled plates only change velocity slowly in response to the initiation of new subduction zones; the initiation of subduction in the Western Pacific at ::::::: 45 Ma was likely the result of a change in Pacific plate motion as opposed to causing the change in the direction of plate motion. The Quest for Self-Consistent Generation of Plate Tectonics in Mantle Convection Models

Plate tectonics and mantle convection are different aspects of the same, coupled system, yet mantle convection calculations do not exhibit plate tectonic behavior unless it is imposed by the modeler. This paper explores the quest for self-consistent incorporation of plate tectonics into mantle convection models, and presents new results and parameterizations. Simulations of convection with buoy...

The importance of temporal stress variation and dynamic disequilibrium for the initiation of plate tectonics

We use 1-D thermal history models and 3-D numerical experiments to study the impact of dynamic thermal disequilibrium and large temporal variations of normal and shear stresses on the initiation of plate tectonics. Previous models that explored plate tectonics initiation from a steady state, single plate mode of convection concluded that normal stresses govern the initiation of plate tectonics,...

Mantle Convection with a Brittle Lithosphere: Thoughts on the Global Tectonic Styles of the Earth and Venus

Plates are an integral part of the convection system in the fluid mantle, but plate boundaries are the product of brittle faulting and plate motions are strongly influenced by the existence of such faults. The conditions for plate tectonics are studied by considering brittle behaviour, using Byerlee’s law to limit the maximum stress in the lithosphere, in a mantle convection model with temperat...

Multi Phase Flows and Computational Aspects of Plate Tectonics

A Lagrangian Particle Finite Element scheme is presented which is suited to problems in which material composition and history must be tracked through very large deformations associated with creeping fluid flow. The method is applied to large-scale geodynamic modeling in which some parts of the system are actively convecting which others remain nearly stagnant. Introduction Geology records the ...

The Relation Between Mantle Dynamics and Plate Tectonics: A Primer

We present an overview of the relation between mantle dynamics and plate tectonics, adopting the perspective that the plates are the surface manifestation, i.e., the top thermal boundary layer, of mantle convection. We review how simple convection pertains to plate formation, regarding the aspect ratio of convection cells; the forces that drive convection; and how internal heating and temperatu...
