چکیده

In the year 2000, a paper entitled ‘‘A Heat Transfer Model for Firefighters’ Protective Clothing’’ was published in Volume 36, No. 1, of Fire Technology, and it received the 2001 Harry C. Bigglestone Award for Excellence in Written Communication of Fire Protection Concepts from The Fire Protection Research Foundation. Since the publication of this paper, there has been additional development of the heat transfer model. The radiant heat transfer element has been refined, and the model can now address predictions of heat transfer through wet protective clothing materials. Additionally, there has been an extension of the thermal properties database for fabric materials used to manufacture firefighters’ protective clothing. These improvements have significantly expanded the capabilities of the model and provide users with a more robust tool for economically predicting thermal protective clothing per-

A Study on Total Heat Loss of Clothing Materials for Firefighters’ Protective Clothing

Clothing is often made of materials that impede the flow of heat and moisture from the skin to the environment. Consequently, people may suffer from heat stress or cold stress when wearing clothing in different environmental conditions. Therefore it is important to quantify the thermal resistance and evaporative resistance of clothing materials and to consider these properties when selecting ma...

Thermal Strains Wearing Aluminized Firefighters’ Clothing

This study examined the influences of aluminized (Type A) and non-aluminized firefighters’ protective clothing (Type B, C, D and CON) on physiological and subjective responses in radiant heat. Total clothing weight was 6.24, 6.38, 6.06, 5.76 and 3.82 kg for Type A, B, C, D and CON, respectively. Eight firefighters performed exercise at an air temperature of 30°C with 50%RH. Three bouts of 10 mi...

Performance of firefighters' protective clothing after heat exposure.

Heat and mechanical protection properties of 6 fabric combinations commonly used in firefighters' protective clothing were assessed before and after different heat treatment. It was shown that after heat exposure, the values obtained were generally lower than in the original state. The mechanical properties of the materials were more affected by heat than by heat protective properties. In 2 cas...

Cotton as an Innovative Fabric for Firefighter Protective Clothing

Firefighting is a dangerous occupation that relies heavily on the effectiveness of protective clothing. This type of protective clothing must resist heat, flame, rough surfaces, and sharp objects as well as protect the wearer against biological/chemical surfaces. In order to address these issues, a survey was administered to firefighters to determine necessary changes that would make the presen...

Maximum allowable exposure to different heat radiation levels in three types of heat protective clothing

To determine safe working conditions in emergency situations at petro-chemical plants in the Netherlands a study was performed on three protective clothing combinations (operator's, firefighter's and aluminized). The clothing was evaluated at four different heat radiation levels (3.0, 4.6, 6.3 and 10.0 k∙W∙m-2) in standing and walking posture with a thermal manikin RadMan™. Time till pain thres...
