چکیده

A phenomenological voidÐcrack nucleation model for ductile metals with second phases is described which is motivated from fracture mechanics and microscale physical observations[ The voidÐcrack nucleation model is a function of the fracture toughness of the aggregate material\ length scale parameter "taken to be the average size of the second phase particles in the examples shown in this writing#\ the volume fraction of the second phase\ strain level\ and stress state[ These parameters are varied to explore their e}ects upon the nucleation and damage rates[ Examples of correlating the voidÐcrack nucleation model to tension data in the literature illustrate the utility of the model for several ductile metals[ Furthermore\ compression\ tension\ and torsion experiments on a cast AlÐSiÐMg alloy were conducted to determine voidÐcrack nucleation rates under di}erent loading conditions[ The nucleation model was then correlated to the cast AlÐSiÐMg data as well[ Þ 0888 Elsevier Science Ltd[ All rights reserved[

Dislocation creation and void nucleation in FCC ductile metals under tensile loading: A general microscopic picture

Numerous theoretical and experimental efforts have been paid to describe and understand the dislocation and void nucleation processes that are fundamental for dynamic fracture modeling of strained metals. To date an essential physical picture on the self-organized atomic collective motions during dislocation creation, as well as the essential mechanisms for the void nucleation obscured by the e...

A new insight into ductile fracture of ultrafine-grained Al-Mg alloys

It is well known that when coarse-grained metals undergo severe plastic deformation to be transformed into nano-grained metals, their ductility is reduced. However, there are no ductile fracture criteria developed based on grain refinement. In this paper, we propose a new relationship between ductile fracture and grain refinement during deformation, considering factors besides void nucleation a...

The Bainitic Phase Transformation in Aluminium Containing Ductile Irons after Short Time of Austempering

The influence of aluminium on the microstructure of austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) has been studied. A number of irons of different compositions have been made by green sand casting and gravity die casting of appropriate design to provide the experimental materials. Austenitising was carried out at different temperatures and holding times for a variety of experimental irons to achieve suff...

On the role of secondary porosity and associated ‘Size- effects’ in the mechanism of void growth and coalescence

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING engineering.tamu.edu/aerospace Abstract Ductile fracture in metals is an area of active research. While the mechanism of failure (void nucleation, growth and coalescence) in ductile materials is well-understood, the existing models still have several limitations in an accurate prediction of this phenomenon. These models need to be enriched with a more precise understanding...

Why are some Interfaces in Materials Stronger than others?

Grain boundaries (GBs) are often the preferred sites for void nucleation in ductile metals. However, it has been observed that all boundaries do not contribute equally to this process. We present a mechanistic rationale for the role of GBs in damage nucleation in copper, along with a quantitative map for predicting preferred void nucleation at GBs based on molecular dynamics simulations in copp...
