چکیده

We investigated male mating behaviour in a population of Poecilia mexicana from a Mexican limestone cave. A previous study has shown that unlike surface-dwelling P. mexicana, Cave molly males show surprisingly low frequencies of sexual behaviour when together with a female. In surface-living mollies, small males are typically more sexually active than large ones. By contrast, the frequency of sexual behaviour was found to be correlated positively with male body size in the Cave molly. We asked whether the presence of a larger male competitor would influence the mating tactic of small males. In full contact experiments with one large male, one small male and one female interacting, we found: (1) small males did not switch to the pattern of sexual behaviour known from surface-living mollies. (2) In light, the frequency of sexual behaviour was found to be significantly correlated positively with male body size. In darkness, sexual behaviour tended to increase with increasing male body size but no significant correlation was found. Apparently, small Cave molly males do not use “alternative mating behaviour” even in the presence of a larger competitor. The size-dependent pattern of mating behaviour seems paradoxical because small males appear not to compensate behaviourally for the mating disadvantage they have due to female choice.

Sex Recognition in Surfaceand Cave Dwelling Male Atlanticmollies Poecilia Mexicana

ŽAnimals colonizing lightless subterranean habitats can no longer rely on visual signals to find mating partners. In the present study, we investigated the ability of males to recognize females in two surface and a cave dwelling population of a livebearing fish, Poecilia mexicana. In surface populations males discriminated between sexes with visual plus non-visual cues available and with visual...

Male mate choice and sperm allocation in a sexual/asexual mating complex of Poecilia (Poeciliidae, Teleostei).

Male mate choice is critical for understanding the evolution and maintenance of sexual/asexual mating complexes involving sperm-dependent, gynogenetic species. Amazon mollies (Poecilia formosa) require sperm to trigger embryogenesis, but the males (e.g. Poecilia mexicana) do not contribute genes. Males benefit from mating with Amazon mollies, because such matings make males more attractive to c...

Otolith morphology and hearing abilities in cave- and surface-dwelling ecotypes of the Atlantic molly, Poecilia mexicana (Teleostei: Poeciliidae)

Cave fish have rarely been investigated with regard to their inner ear morphology, hearing abilities, and acoustic communication. Based on a previous study that revealed morphological differences in the saccular otolith between a cave and two surface populations of Poecilia mexicana, we checked for additional differences in utricular and lagenar otoliths and tested whether different populations...

Possible effects of sperm limitation on the reproductive success of the Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa (Poeciliidae)

Using artifi cial insemination we studied the role of sperm number on relative reproductive success in the gynogenetic Amazon molly (Poecilia formosa). This species is unisexual, but depends on mating with males for sperm of closely related species (Poecilia mexicana and Poecilia latipinna) to trigger embryogenesis. The male genome is not incorporated into the female genome; inheritance is stri...
