Recurring vaginitis and cystitis: which role for pathogenic biofilms?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recurrent cystitis and vaginitis are a prominent part of daily medical consultations in urology and gynecology. The difficulty in addressing recurrences with an effective therapeutic strategy is increasingly frustrating, both for patients and physicians. Despite the failure in reducing the aggressiveness of bacterial pathogens especially in the uro-genital tract, there is a limited awareness of the clinical importance of polymicrobial biofilm in infectious processes and in their escalating drug-resistance, which suggests a key connection with the parallel growth of antibiotics’ medical prescriptions (Kamenski et Al 2012; Ruef 2005).

Vaginal Lactobacillus: biofilm formation in vivo – clinical implications
Vaginal lactobacilli provide protection against intrusive pathogenic bacteria. Some Lactobacillus spp. produce in vitro a thick, protective biofilm. We report in vivo formation of biofilm by vaginal Lactobacillus jensenii. The biofilm formation was captured in fresh wet-mount microscopic samples from asymptomatic patients after treatment for recurrent bacterial vaginitis. In vivo documentation ...
متن کاملBiofilms: An Underappreciated Mechanism of Treatment Failure and Recurrence in Vaginal Infections.
Biofilms are microbial communities of surface-attached cells embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix. They are of major medical significance because they decrease susceptibility to antimicrobial agents and enhance the spread of antimicrobial resistance. Biofilm-associated bacterial and fungal microorganisms have increasingly been recognized to play a role in multiple infectious disease...
متن کاملEffects of biofilm formation in bacteria from different perspectives
Bacterial communities are able to form complex and three-dimensional biofilm structures. Biofilm formation is an ancient and integral component of the prokaryotic life cycle and a key factor for survival in diverse niches. In biofilms, bacterial lifestyle changes from free-floating cells to sessile cells. Presence in biofilms gives new traits to bacteria, which distinguish them from free cells....
متن کاملDysuria: Evaluation and Differential Diagnosis in Adults.
The most common cause of acute dysuria is infection, especially cystitis. Other infectious causes include urethritis, sexually transmitted infections, and vaginitis. Noninfectious inflammatory causes include a foreign body in the urinary tract and dermatologic conditions. Noninflammatory causes of dysuria include medication use, urethral anatomic abnormalities, local trauma, and interstitial cy...

Oral and dental diseases such as dental caries and gingivitis are common problems in human societies. The formation of biofilms is considered as a very important mechanism of disease by these bacteria. The present study is an overview of these infectious diseases and their bacterial etiology, the mechanism of formation and role of dental plaque biofilm in the development of these infections and...
