Anaphylactic reactions during oral food challenge test in pediatric patients

چکیده
Background The prevalence of Food Allergy (FA) is increasing and the correct diagnosis is mandatory among patients with adverse reactions to foods. The oral food challenge tests (OFCT) remain the better tests for FA diagnosis and its usage is essential to avoid misdiagnosis. As severe reactions may occur, staff must be prepared to manage lifethreatening situations. The aim of this study was to describe the anaphylactic reactions associated to OFCT in pediatric patients.

Family physicians play a central role in the suspicion and diagnosis of immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergies, but they are also critical in redirecting the evaluation for symptoms that patients are falsely attributing to allergies. Although any food is a potential allergen, more than 90 percent of acute systemic reactions to food in children are from eggs, milk, soy, wheat, or peanuts, and ...
متن کاملRisk Factors for Severe Reactions during Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Food Challenges.
BACKGROUND Severe anaphylactic symptoms can occur during oral food challenges (OFCs). Thus, high-risk patients (e.g., patients with a history of anaphylaxis or high antigen-specific immunoglobulin E [IgE] levels) must carefully undergo OFCs in hospitals. We attempted to identify the risk factors for severe symptoms during OFC testing among high-risk patients. METHODS We retrospectively evalua...

BACKGROUND The most reliable method to diagnose food allergy or to determine tolerance is the oral food challenge. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to describe the open oral food challenge applied to children with suspicion of cow's milk allergy mediated by immunoglobulin E, and evaluate the relation between the clinical history and skin prick test with the challenge outcomes. PATIENTS ...

Results Median age: 10.6 years. Median maintenance period: 1.5 years. CM-IgE before SOTI: 101 KU/L. Median threshold dose at oral food challenge before SOTI: 2.5 ml. Median current daily CM dose: 200 ml. Allergic reactions to CM: 29 children have had reactions, as follows: A) Non anaphylactic reactions: 15 children. 8 children suffer daily from mild symptoms (4, mouth itching; 1, abdominal pain...

Background Lipid Transfer Protein (LTP) allergy constitutes the first cause of food allergy to vegetables in Southern Europe. LTPs are highly stable proteins, resistant to both gastric digestion and high temperatures. Allergic reactions to multiples vegetables, not phylogenetically related, are produced based on the cross-reactivity among these proteins, a phenomenon that has been named LTP syn...
