Performance Evaluation of Multilevel-Assignment Hierarchical Round-Robin Bandwidth Scheduling for ATM

In ATM networks, the issue of bandwidth scheduling is critical to satisfying quality-of-service requirements of individual connections. This paper discusses a modiied implementation of a previously proposed scheduler called Hierarchical Round-Robin (HRR). We show this HRR is appropriate for ATM because it can guarantee a minimum rate of service (which is critical for real-time connections), is simple to implement, and has ne bandwidth granularity. We nd a minimum-bandwidth (a.k.a. guaranteed rate or guaranteed service) property for this HRR and we derive a (;)-constraint on the cell departure process of an HRR queue. How these parameters contribute to end-to-end delay bounds and buuer sizing is also mentioned.
