Retrieval of Precise Radial Velocities from Near-Infrared High Resolution Spectra of Low Mass Stars
نویسنده
چکیده
Given that low-mass stars have intrinsically low luminosities at optical wavelengths and a propensity for stellar activity, it is advantageous for radial velocity (RV) surveys of these objects to use near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. In this work we describe and test a novel RV extraction pipeline dedicated to retrieving RVs from low mass stars using NIR spectra taken by the CSHELL spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, where a methane isotopologue gas cell is used for wavelength calibration. Precise Radial Velocities of Giant Stars II. Pollux and its Planetary Companion
It has long been speculated that the observed periodic radial velocity pattern for the K giant Pollux might be explained in terms of an orbiting planetary companion. We have collected 80 high-resolution spectra for Pollux at Lick Observatory yielding precise radial velocities with a mean error of 3.8 m/s, providing the most comprehensive and precise data set available for this star. Our data co...

We report on the development of a technique for precise radial-velocity measurements of cool stars and brown dwarfs in the near infrared. Our technique is analogous to the Iodine (I2) absorption cell method that has proven so successful in the optical regime. We rely on telluric CH4 absorption features to serve as a wavelength reference, relative to which we measure Doppler shifts of the CO and...
متن کاملMass Outflow and Chromospheric Activity of Red Giant Stars in Globular Clusters
High resolution spectra of 110 selected red giant stars in the globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078) were obtained with Hectochelle at the MMT telescope in 2005 May, 2006 May, and 2006 October. Echelle orders containing Hα and Ca II H & K are used to identify emission and line asymmetries characterizing motions in the extended atmospheres. Emission in Hα is detected to a luminosity of log(L/L⊙) = 2.3...

We have obtained radial velocities of a sample of 18 ultracool dwarfs with spectral types in the interval M6.5–T8 using high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC and the Keck II telescope. Among our targets there are two likely field stars of type late M, one M6.5 Pleiades brown dwarf, and fifteen L and T likely brown dwarfs of the solar neighborhood with estimated masses in ...
متن کاملInfrared radial velocities of vB 10
We present radial velocities of the M8V-type, very low-mass star vB 10 that have been obtained at four different epochs of observations between 2001 and 2008. We use high-resolution (R∼ 20,000) near-infrared (J-band) spectra taken with the nirspec instrument on the Keck II telescope. Our data suggest that vB 10 shows radial velocity variability with an amplitude of ∼1 km s−1, a result that is c...
