چکیده

This paper describes a modeling method and a new optimal control approach to investigate a Mach number control problem for the NASA Ames 11-Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel. The flow in the wind tunnel is modeled by the 1-D unsteady Euler equations whose boundary conditions prescribe a controlling action by a compressor. The boundary control inputs to the compressor are in turn controlled by a drive motor system and an inlet guide vane system whose dynamics are modeled by ordinary differential equations. The resulting Euler equations are thus coupled to the ordinary differential equations via the boundary conditions. Optimality conditions are established by an adjoint method and are used to develop a model predictive linear-quadratic optimal control for regulating the Mach number due to a test model disturbance during a continuous pitch.

Computational Assessment of a 3-stage Axial Compressor Which Provides Airflow to the Nasa 11- by 11-foot Transonic Wind Tunnel, including Design Changes for Increased Performance

New rotor blades are to be fabricated for the 24 foot diameter, 3-stage axial compressor which provides airflow in the 11by 11-Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel Facility at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. This presents an opportunity to increase the peak Mach number capability of the tunnel by redesigning the compressor for increased pressure ratio. Simulations of the existing ...

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF EFFECTS OF WALL POROSITY AND SUCTION ON THE FLOW QUALITY IN A TRANSONIC WIND TUNNEL

A trisonic wind tunnel has been modified to improve its flow quality when operating at transonic speeds through perforated walls and side suctions. The usefulness of such a perforated wall, already known, is reduction of the blockage effect as well as the shock elimination. Two types of perforated walls have been used in this investigation. The first wall had a porosity of about 22% and the hol...

A Shock Tube Driven Transonic Wind Tunnel

A small transonic wind tunnel was designed, constructed and calibrated in order to provide a tool for the study and demonstration of transonic flow phenomena. The wind tunnel makes use of flow properties following the propagation of a shock wave along a tube in order to create the transonic flow. This is in contrast to conventional transonic facilities which are supplied from a reservoir or com...

Analysis of the Effects of Wall Interference on 0.4×0.8-Meter Transonic Wind Tunnel Airfoils Tests

This article presents analytical and computational analysis of the influence of the wind tunnel walls on transonic airfoil tests. The goal is to quantify the effects of the wind tunnel walls and characterize the key parameters affecting the flow field in order to construct a numerical model to realize experimental data corrections. Firstly, the experimental data are compared with well-documente...

Static Aeroelastic Analysis of Transonic Wind Tunnel Models Using Finite Element Methods

A computational method for accurately predicting the static aeroelastic deformations of typical transonic transport wind tunnel models is described. The method utilizes a finite element method (FEM) for predicting the deformations. Extensive calibratiodvalidation of this method was carried out using a novel wind-off wind tunnel model static loading experiment and wind-on optical wing twist meas...
