Studies on Starling ' s Law of the Heart
نویسنده
چکیده
IN THE experiments performed on the canine heart-lung preparation, Patterson, Piper, and Starling observed that when venous return was augmented, cardiac performance initially increased, but when venous return was elevated beyond a critical level, the performance progressively declined, i.e., there was a descending limb of the Starling curve.1-3 During the past 20 years a number of studies have been carried out in order to determine whether or not the human heart also exhibits a descending limb of the Starling curve. This problem has been explored by acutely reducing the venous return to the heart by either mechanical or pharmacologic means and determining the induced changes in the cardiac output, and in the venous, right atrial, or right ventricular end-diastolic pressures.4 In general, these studies have indicated that in patients without congestive heart failure, impeding the venous return results in a fall in the cardiac output, whereas in patients with congestive heart failure, small increases in cardiac output sometimes occur. In some of the studies the relationships between the changes in right heart filling pressure and cardiac output were inconsistent.5' 7It appeared that a more direct approach to this problem could be achieved by relating the end-diastolic pressure of the left ventricle to the mechanical activity of this chamber during alterations of venous return. In the present investigation, venous return was impeded by progressively inflating a balloon in the inferior vena cava while left ventricular end-diastolic pressure, output, and work were measured. The studies were performed in patients with and without clinical and

4 previous article’ showed that the observations on which Starling based his famous paper were first made by Fran#{231}ois-Frank in 1877, corroborated and extended by Otto Frank’s massive presentation in 1895 (subscribers to German journals were promised a fixed number of pages per year), and put into the form later called Starling’s Law by Yandell Henderson of Yale in 1906. متن کاملStudies on Starling's Law of the Heart Determinants of the Relationship Between Left Ventricular End-Diastolic Pressure and Circumference
IN EXPERIMENTS oti the dog heart-lung preparation which led to the formulation of the well-known "Law of the Heart," Patterson, Piper and Starling observed that when cardiac work was augmented, ventricular volume sometimes increased in the face of a constant left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. These investigators concluded that the strength of myocardial contraction was a function of end-d...
متن کاملApplication of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β Equation of State for Refrigerant Fluids
Herein, the application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β equation of state (EoS) for 13 refrigerant fluids was investigated. The EoS could predict the saturated liquid densities of these refrigerants over the temperature range of 100-400 K and pressures from zero up to187 MPa with the average absolute deviations of 2.66%. The accuracy of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β EoS in liquid density prediction was al...
متن کاملSimulation of the Frank-Starling Law of the Heart
We developed a lumped parameter, computer-based model of an equivalent electronic circuit for a one-atrium one-ventricle (frog) heart attached to a vascular circuit, to simulate a basic concept of cardiovascular physiology, the Frank-Starling Law of the Heart. A series of simulations was performed, to observe changes in cardiovascular variables (e.g., arterial pressure, ventricular volume, and ...
متن کاملExploring cardiac biophysical properties
The heart is subject to multiple sources of stress. To maintain its normal function, and successfully overcome these stresses, heart muscle is equipped with fine-tuned regulatory mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms are inherent within the myocardium itself and are known as intrinsic mechanisms. Over a century ago, Otto Frank and Ernest Starling described an intrinsic mechanism by which the hea...
