چکیده

We study lensing magnification of source galaxies by intervening galaxy groups and clusters using a halo model approach. Halos are modeled with truncated NFW profiles with ellipticity added to their lensing potential and propagated to observable lensing statistics. The magnification probability distribution of this model compares well with numerical results from ray-tracing simulations. We apply this model to observable effects of magnification, primarily the number counts of high-redshift galaxies. Using the BLAST data for submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), we find that magnification affects steep regions of the SMG counts distribution by up to ∼ 40 %. This effect is still smaller than current errors on the counts. We consider the effect of this highredshift galaxy population on contaminating the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (SZ) signal of massive clusters. We find that for the majority of clusters expected to be detected with ongoing SZ surveys, there is significant contamination from the Poisson noise due to background SMGs. This contribution can be comparable to the SZ increment for typical clusters and can also contaminate the SZ decrement of low mass clusters. Thus SZ observations, especially for the increment part of the SZ spectrum, need to include careful modeling of this irreducible contamination for proper mass estimation. Lensing does not enhance the contamination significantly on average, though it may do so close to cores of massive clusters or for very disturbed clusters.

Magnification Effects on Source Counts and Fluxes

We consider the effect of lensing magnification on high redshift sources in the case that magnification varies on the sky, as expected in wide fields of view or within observed galaxy clusters. We give expressions for number counts, flux and flux variance as integrals over the probability distribution of the magnification. We obtain these through a simple mapping between averages over the obser...

Submillimeter Galaxy Number Counts and Magnification by Galaxy Clusters

We present an analytical model which reproduces measured galaxy number counts from surveys in the wavelength range of 500 μm to 2 mm. The model involves a single high-redshift galaxy population with a Schechter luminosity function which has been gravitationally lensed by galaxy clusters in the mass range 10 to 10M⊙. This simple model reproduces both the low flux and the high flux end of the num...

Lensing-Induced Structure of Submillimeter Sources: Implications for the Microwave Background

We consider the effect of lensing by galaxy clusters on the angular distribution of submillimeter wavelength objects. While lensing does not change the total flux and number counts of submillimeter sources, it can affect the number counts and fluxes of flux-limited samples. Therefore imposing a flux cut on point sources not only reduces the overall Poisson noise, but imprints the correlations b...

A Deep Submillimeter Survey of Lensing Clusters: a New Window on Galaxy Formation and Evolution

We present the first results of a submillimeter survey of distant clusters using the new Submillimeter CommonUser Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We have mapped fields in two massive, concentrated clusters, A370 at and Cl 2244202 at , at wavelengths of 450 and 850 mm. The z 5 0.37 z 5 0.33 resulting continuum maps cover a total area of about 10 arcmin to 1 j noise ...

The mass of a cluster of galaxies can be estimated from its lens magnification, which can be determined from the variation in number counts of background galaxies. In order to derive the mass one needs to make assumptions for the lens shear, which is unknown from the variation in number counts alone. Furthermore, one needs to go beyond the weak lensing (linear) approximation as most of the obse...
