Tree shelters influence growth and survival of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) and cork oak (Quercus suber L.) plants on degraded Mediterranean sites

چکیده
Tree shelters were used in an ecological restoration effort in 1999 and 2000 to test the decrease in transplant shock and increase in growth and survival of two selected Mediterranean species, carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) and cork oak (Quercus suber L.), planted in a dry degraded region. At plantation, two treatments were established, one planted with 60 cm tall TUBEX MinitubesTM and the other planted without tree shelters. Results have shown that tree shelters dramatically increased survival of sheltered plants and also stimulated height growth, probably caused by reduced light regimes inside shelters, inducing shade adaptation. Different biomass partition occurred between sheltered and unsheltered plants, although no effect in increased biomass production was observed. This work shows that individual tree shelters successfully increase establishment of newly planted plants in dry, degraded areas of the Mediterranean.

Clonal Propagation of Carob (ceratonia Siliqua L., Fabaceae)
Mature seeds of carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua L.) were germinated on hormone free MS medium. Efforts were made to develop multiple shoots by using axillary buds of in vitro grown seedlings on MS medium fortified with different concentrations of BA singly and BA in combination with IAA or GA3. Axillary buds produced single shoot with a moderate amount of callus at the base of the explant after c...

Cork oak ( Quercus suber L.) forests are def ned here as the range of habitats from open savanna-like woodland formations to dense forests. According to the European forest type’s nomenclature (EEA 2007 ) these ecosystems are included in the ‘broadleaved evergreen forest’ class and in the ‘Mediterranean e vergreen oak forest’ type. This forest type is dominated by the e vergreen sclerophyllous ...

Cork oak (Quercus suber) forests are acknowledged for their biodiversity and economic (mainly cork production) values. WildWres are one of the main threats contributing to cork oak decline in the Mediterranean Basin, and one major question that managers face after Wre in cork oak stands is whether the burned trees should be coppiced or not. This decision can be based on the degree of expected c...

Objective: Carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is an evergreen tree with fruits that have potent antioxidant activity. The aim of this study was to investigate alleviative effects of carob fruit hydro-alcoholic extract (CFHAE) against reproductive toxicity induced by lead (Pb) in male mice. Material and Methods: Forty-two NMRI adult male mice were randomly categorized into 7 groups (N=6). Group ...
