چکیده

BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic and inflammation mucosal disease. Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and oxidative stress damage might be the cause. Malondialdehyd (MDA), one parameter of lipid peroxidation is appropriate for DNA damage in OLP disease. OBJECTIVE To evaluate antioxidants and oxidative stress parameters in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) diseases and healthy control group with compare on serum and salivary samples. MATERIAL & METHODS The research population included 22 patients with OLP which recently diagnosed and 22 healthy controls matched for periodontal status. Total antioxidant activity (TAA), Malondialdehyde (MDA) or lipid peroxidation product and uric acid (UA) were evaluated in both serum and saliva. The t-tests were used for differences between the two groups in normal distributed variables and also Spearman's rho correlation coefficient for assessing association between serum and salivary fluids. RESULTS TAA levels in OLP patients showed significant result and lower than healthy control group (p=0.39). Also, results in the saliva MDA concentration, was significantly higher in OLP patients than controls. In correlation test, inverse and significant correlation was observed between the MDA and UA values(r=0. 682, P=0.0001) and a significant correlation was found between serum TAA and UA values. CONCLUSION This study showed that OLP groups have higher cellular lipid peroxidation in compare to healthy controls and low level of TAA than controls. Patients with OLP are believed to be more at risk of antioxidant-oxidative stress imbalance.

Increased salivary lipid peroxidation in human subjects with oral lichen planus.

BACKGROUND Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic inflammatory mucosal disease of unknown aetiology. Recently, increased oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and lipid peroxidation level, in the saliva of patients with OLP. METHOD Thirty patients with OLP (15 men, 15 women; mean ...

Salivary Total Antioxidant Capacity and Lipid Peroxidation in Patients with Erosive Oral Lichen Planus

Background and aims. Oral lichen planus is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa with malignant potential, pathogenesis of which is not still well known. Free radicals and reactive oxygen species can play an important role in the pathogenesis of oral lichen planus. The aim of this study was to investigate salivary oxidative stress and antioxidant systems in patients with oral...

The Antioxidant Potential of Saliva: Clinical Significance in Oral Diseases

The use of saliva as a diagnostic fluid is a relatively recent trend. Saliva is a mixed oral fluid derived from major and minor salivary glands. Oral fluid, often called the mirror of the body’s health, is a perfect medium to be explored for health and disease surveillance. Saliva is considered to be the first line of defense against oxidative stress (OS), the main cause for many systemic and o...

Evaluation of serum Malondialdehyde level in patients with oral lichen planus

Introduction: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a useful determinant to show high level of lipid peroxidation which lead to impaired cell function. Previous studies have mentioned there is a relationship between high oxidative stress and low anti-oxidant activity in patients with oral lichen planus. The aim of this study was to evaluate serum level of Malondialdehyde as an indicator of oxidative stress ...

Serum and saliva collagenase-3 (MMP-13) in patients with oral lichen planus and oral squamous cell carcinoma

Background: Oral lichen planus (OLP) has been classified as a pre-malignant condition. Matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) or collagenase-3 may play a key role in cancer development. The aim of this study was to compare serum and saliva MMP-13 between patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).   Methods : This cross sectional study was performed on 30 pat...
