Abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology--a case report.

چکیده
A case of abdominal Burkitt's lymphoma diagnosed through aspiration cytology is described. This 9-year-old boy presented with abdominal pain and distention for three months accompanied by fever and night sweat during the last month. An abdominal sonography and CT scan showed hepatosplenomegaly and an intrahepatic mass with celiac lymph node enlargement, ascites, and pleural fluid. A peripheral blood smear showed a few blast cells. Aspiration of the abdominal mass revealed very cellular aspirates consisting of diffusely scattered small monotonous round cells. The cells had little cytoplasm, along with round nuclei that showed clear-cut nuclear membrane, coarse chromatin pattern, and multiple small prominent nucleoli. Differential diagnoses considered were small round cell sarcomas such as malignant lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma. Of these, malignant lymphoma of the small noncleaved cell type was most consistent with the results of several studies including immunohistochemical staining, peripheral blood smear, and bone marrow biopsy. The cells were positive for leukocyte common antigen (LCA) and showed finely vacuolated basophilic cytoplasm in both the peripheral blood smear and bone marrow biopsy, characteristic of Burkitt's lymphoma cells.

VALUE OF FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION IN DIAGNOSING ABDOMINAL AND RETROPERITONEAL MASSES OF CHILDREN
The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of fine needle aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of abdominal and retroperitoneal masses in children on this study. In 53 cases of childhood abdominal and retroperitoneal masses within a 4 year period (1998- 2001) preoperative fine needle aspiration was done under the guide of CT scan. 2 pathologists reviewed fine needle aspiration smears. I...
متن کاملFine needle aspiration study of the abdominal cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules
Background: Abdominal cutaneous and subcutaneous nodules are uncommon benign or malignant lesions. The majority of the malignant nodules are metastatic in origin and may be the initial presentation of a primary malignancy; hence, an early diagnosis is important. Our aim of this study was to find out the spectrum of lesions (both non-neoplastic and neoplastic) that present as cutaneous and subcu...
متن کاملCytodiagnosis of scar endometriosis: A case series
Introduction: Endometriosis is defined as the presence of hormonally responsive endometrial tissue outside the uterus. The overall prevalence is 8–15% in women of reproductive age group. Subcutaneous location causing a palpable lump that is amenable for cytodiagnosis is not common; most of the cases are sites of previous cesarean section or episiotomy site. Case Series: We report three cases of...
متن کاملDiagnostic Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Primary Thyroid Lymphoma
Primary thyroid lymphomas (PTL) are extremely uncommon neoplasms accounting for 5% of all thyroid malignancies. There are very few small series and occasional case reports of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of PTL in literature. We present an interesting and rare case of PTL diagnosed on FNAC. FNAC is an important tool in the diagnosis of thyroid lymphoma. Journal of Cytology 2007; 24 (3...
