Weighted BFBT Preconditioner for Stokes Flow Problems with Highly Heterogeneous Viscosity

چکیده
We present a weighted BFBT approximation (w-BFBT) to the inverse Schur complement of a Stokes system with highly heterogeneous viscosity. When used as part of a Schur complement-based Stokes preconditioner, we observe robust fast convergence for Stokes problems with smooth but highly varying (up to 10 orders of magnitude) viscosities, optimal algorithmic scalability with respect to mesh refinement, and only a mild dependence on the polynomial order of high-order finite element discretizations (Qk × P k−1, order k ≥ 2). For certain difficult problems, we demonstrate numerically that w-BFBT significantly improves Stokes solver convergence over the widely used inverse viscosity-weighted pressure mass matrix approximation of the Schur complement. In addition, we derive theoretical eigenvalue bounds to prove spectral equivalence of w-BFBT. Using detailed numerical experiments, we discuss modifications to w-BFBT at Dirichlet boundaries that decrease the number of iterations. The overall algorithmic performance of the Stokes solver is governed by the efficacy of w-BFBT as a Schur complement approximation and, in addition, by our parallel hybrid spectral-geometric-algebraic multigrid (HMG) method, which we use to approximate the inverses of the viscous block and variable-coefficient pressure Poisson operators within w-BFBT. Building on the scalability of HMG, our Stokes solver achieves a parallel efficiency of 90% while weak scaling over a more than 600-fold increase from 48 to all 30,000 cores of TACC’s Lonestar 5 supercomputer.

Robust preconditioning methods for algebraic problems, arising in multi- phase flow models
The aim of the project is to construct, analyse and implement fast and reliable numerical solution methods to simulate multi-phase flow, modeled by a coupled system consisting of the time-dependent Cahn-Hilliard and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity and variable density. This thesis mainly discusses the efficient solution methods for the latter equations aiming at c...
متن کاملBlock Preconditioners Based on Approximate Commutators
This paper introduces a strategy for automatically generating a block preconditioner for solving the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. We consider the “pressure convection– diffusion preconditioners” proposed by Kay, Loghin, and Wathen [11] and Silvester, Elman, Kay, and Wathen [16]. Numerous theoretical and numerical studies have demonstrated mesh independent convergence on several probl...
متن کاملRobust preconditioners for the high-contrast Stokes problem
We study the Stokes equation with high-contrast viscosity coefficient and this regime corresponds to a small Reynolds number regime because viscosity is inversely proportional to the Reynolds number. Numerical solution to the Stokes flow problems especially with high-contrast variations in viscosity is critically needed in the computational geodynamics community. One of the main applications of...
متن کاملA Relaxed Dimensional Factorization preconditioner for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
In this paper we introduce a Relaxed Dimensional Factorization (RDF) preconditioner for saddle point problems. Properties of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed and compared with those of the closely related Dimensional Splitting (DS) preconditioner recently introduced by Benzi and Guo in [8]. Numerical results for a variety of finite element discretizations of both steady and unsteady incom...
متن کاملPreconditioning the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable viscosity
This paper deals with preconditioners for the iterative solution of the discrete Oseen’s problem with variable viscosity. The motivation of this work originates from numerical simulations of multiphase flow, governed by the coupled Cahn-Hilliard and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The impact of variable viscosity on some known preconditioning technique is analyzed. Numerical experiments...
