چکیده

The unusual behaviour of smectites, the ability to change volume when wetted (swelling) or dried (shrinking), make soil containing smectites very unstable and hazardous for the building industry due to foundation movement and poor slope stability. These macroscopic properties are dominated by the structural arrangement of its finest fraction. In this work we show utilisation of a new technique called transmission x-ray microscopy (TXM) based on the synchrotron photon source. This technique enables, for the first time, the study in three dimensions, of smectite gel arranged in voluminous cellular structure and it modification by adding Al13 Keggin macro-molecule [Al13(O)4(OH)24(H2O)12] 7+ . All these observations were conducted in the natural aqueous environment.

Transmission X-ray Microscopy (TXM) Reveals 3-D Nano-structure of Clay-water Suspension

The unusual behaviour of smectites, their ability to change volume when wetted (swelling) or dried (shrinking), makes soil rich in smectites very unstable and dangerous for the building industry due to possible or likely movement of building foundations and poor slope stability. These macroscopic properties are dominated by the structural arrangement of smectites finest fraction. Here, we show ...

Transmission X-ray microscopy reveals the clay aggregate discrete structure in aqueous environment.

The utilization of new transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) using the synchrotron photon source enable for the first time the study in three dimensions microsize clay particles in aggregates in their natural aqueous environment. This technique makes possible remarkable accurate images of nanosize mineral interparticle structure which forms a new nanocomposite. The Birdwood kaolinite/LDH aggregat...

Advantages and limitations of the synchrotron based transmission X-ray microscopy in the study of the clay aggregate structure in aqueous suspensions.

This paper reports new application of new transmission X-ray microscopy powered by a synchrotron source for the study of aqueous based clay suspensions. This paper delineates the advantages and limitations of this method. The tested transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM) technique has shown good agreement with the cryo-stage SEM technique. The spacial resolution of this TXM technique is 60 nm and ...

Effect of radiation-induced amorphization on smectite dissolution.

Effects of radiation-induced amorphization of smectite were investigated using artificial irradiation. Beams of 925 MeV Xenon ions with radiation dose reaching 73 MGy were used to simulate the effects generated by alpha recoil nuclei or fission products in the context of high level nuclear waste repository. Amorphization was controlled by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and...
