چکیده

The reproductive biology of Poecilia latipinna inhabiting Wadi Haneefah stream, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was studied. The fish (P. latipinna) were found reproductively active round the year. The highest reproductive activity occurred from February to May and August to November which defined two distinct annual periods of reproduction. There was a monthly variation in sex ratio. More females than males were registered during the whole period of study. Males mature at the total body length of 51 mm, while the female maturity was attained at 48 mm. Fifty percent male and female population achieved maturity at the length of 67 mm and 65 mm body length, respectively. The absolute fecundity of P. latipinna ranged from 35 to 161 eggs, the value of co-relation coefficient (r) indicates that the fish's fecundity has stronger relation with weight than with the length.

Feeding rates in the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna and its coexisting sexual parasite, the gynogenetic Amazon molly Poecilia formosa.

Feeding rates of the gynogenetic Amazon molly Poecilia formosa and one of its sexual hosts, the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna, were measured under winter and summer temperature conditions. Food consumption of the unisexual P. formosa in winter conditions was significantly higher than that of P. latipinna, and it is hypothesized that the resulting food stress might have an important influence...

Geographical variation in reproductive character displacement in mate choice by male sailfin mollies.

Female Amazon mollies, Poecilia formosa, are a unisexual species that reproduce by gynogenesis. They must coexist and mate with males of other species (usually the mollies Poecilia latipinna or Poecilia mexicana) to induce embryogenesis, but inheritance is strictly maternal. We examined the mating preference of the male sailfin molly, P. latipinna, for female sailfin mollies versus Amazon molli...

Geographic variation in male mate choice in a gynogenetic species complex: evaluating long-term data across mating contexts

Aim: To consider how geographic variation in species recognition over time affects the speciation process. Organisms: The gynogenetic livebearing fish Poecilia formosa (Amazon molly) is the hybrid offspring of two bisexual parent species, P. latipinna (sailfin molly) and P. mexicana (Atlantic molly). The Amazon molly is an all-female species that must mate with males of their parent species. Bu...

Behavioral and physiological compensation for chronic hypoxia in the sailfin molly (Poecilia latipinna).

This study demonstrates that short-term behavioral and physiological responses may permit the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna to cope successfully with extreme hypoxia and suggests an interaction between behavioral response (aquatic surface respiration [ASR]) and physiological compensation. Poecilia latipinna acclimated to chronic hypoxia (6 wk at 1.0 mg L(-1) O(2)) exhibited higher hemoglobin...

Hypoxia and interdemic variation in Poecilia latipinna

Variation in respiratory traits was quantified between two populations of the sailfin molly Poecilia latipinna (one from a periodically hypoxic salt marsh, Cedar Key, and one from a chronically normoxic river site, Santa Fe River). Two suites of characters were selected: traits that may show both short-term acclimation response and interdemic variation in acclimation response (metabolic rate, c...
