چکیده

The list of preventable and reversible risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease continues to grow. Cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, elevated cholesterol, underlying lipoprotein abnormalities, lipoprotein(a), diabetes, overweight, male gender, and age are well-established risk factors. During the 1990s, there have been many reports associating elevated plasma homocysteine levels with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and consistent evidence that dietary and supplemental folic acid can reduce homocysteine levels.

High plasma homocysteine is identified as an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological studies have shown that increased plasma homocysteine is related to a higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Homocysteine may have an effect on atherosclerosis by damaging the inner lining of arteries and promoting blood clots .Folic acid and oth...

Homocysteine: An Emerging Cardiovascular Risk Factor that Never Really Made it

Serum total homocysteine (tHcy) has been implicated in promoting venous thromboembolic events and atherosclerosis, manifested as coronary heart disease, stroke or peripheral arterial disease. Dietary supplementation with B vitamins that lower tHcy concentrations was expected to reduce cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. However, recent metaanalyses of prospective observational studies and random...

Homocysteine, vitamins, and coronary artery disease. Comprehensive review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE To summarize results of clinical trials investigating the role of homocysteine (tHcy) as a risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and the role of vitamin therapy (folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12) in primary and secondary prevention of CAD. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE MEDLINE was searched from January 1976 to January 1999 to locate cross-sectional, retrospective and prospective coh...

B12 and Folate Concentrations in Opium Addicts Compared to Healthy Subjects: A Case Control Study from Kerman Coronary Artery Disease Risk Study

Background: Opium addiction is a global problem which has implicated many societies. Opium addiction and drug abuse is related to harmful consequences which affect life style, biochemical factors, and vitamins values, and also is considered as a risk for heart diseases. Folate and B12 levels are related to homocysteine and studies about their levels in opium addicts are controversial; therefore...

Intake of fish oil, oleic acid, folic acid, and vitamins B-6 and E for 1 year decreases plasma C-reactive protein and reduces coronary heart disease risk factors in male patients in a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Certain nutrients have been shown to be effective in preventing coronary heart disease. We hypothesized that a daily intake of low amounts of a number of these nutrients would exert beneficial effects on risk factors and clinical variables in patients that suffered from myocardial infarction (MI) and were following a cardiac rehabilitation program. Forty male MI patients were randomly allocated...
