Hall Thruster Simulations with a Two-Dimensional Potential Solver and Kinetic Mobility Model

چکیده
Despite some advancements in the field, Hall thrusters are still typically simulated using quasi-1D codes that assume thermalized potential along magnetic field lines and an analytical model for the cross-field mobility. In this paper, we develop methodology and present results from a Hall thruster simulation which diverges from this approach in two important aspects. First, a two-dimensional model based on current conservation is used to compute the potential. Secondly, we utilize a kinetic model to compute mobility selfconsistently. Preliminary results from this approach are demonstrated using the PPPL cylindrical Hall thruster geometry.

A two-dimensional radial-axial hybrid simulation of the xenon-fueled Stanford Hall Thruster has been adapted to model a bismuth-fed thruster with varying channel geometry. The simulation treats the electrons as a quasi-one-dimensional fluid and the neutrals and ions as discrete superparticles advanced using a particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. Since experimental data of the electron cross-field m...

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to model an electrospray thruster for the ionic liquid (IL) EMIM−BF 4 using an effective-force coarse-grained (CG) potential. The MD simulations provide insight into the atomistic modeling of a capillary-tip-extractor system, the basic elements of an electrospray thruster. A one-dimensional electric field showed an improvement in the model when ...
