A Study of the Distribution of Star-Forming Regions in Luminous Infrared Galaxies by Means of Hα Imaging Observations

چکیده
We performed Hα imaging observations of 22 luminous infrared galaxies to investigate how the distribution of star-forming regions in these galaxies is related to galaxy interactions. Based on correlation diagrams between Hα flux and continuum emission for individual galaxies, a sequence for the distribution of star-forming regions was found: very compact (∼ 100 pc) nuclear starbursts with almost no star-forming activity in the outer regions (type 1), dominant nuclear starbursts . 1 kpc in size and a negligible contribution from the outer regions (type 2), nuclear starbursts & 1 kpc in size and a significant contribution from the outer regions (type 3), and extended starbursts with relatively faint nuclei (type 4). These classes of star-forming region were found to be strongly related to global star-forming properties such as star-formation efficiency, farinfrared color, and dust extinction. There was a clear tendency for the objects with more compact distributions of star-forming regions to show a higher star-formation efficiency and hotter far-infrared color. An appreciable fraction of the sample objects were dominated by extended starbursts (type 4), which is unexpected in the standard scenario of interaction-induced starburst galaxies. We also found that the distribution of star-forming regions was weakly but clearly related to galaxy morphology: severely disturbed objects had a more concentrated distribution of star-forming regions. This suggests that the properties of galaxy interactions, such as dynamical phase and orbital Visiting Astronomer, Okayama Astrophysical Observatory of National Astronomical Observatory. Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe Rest-frame Optical Spectra of Scuba Galaxies
We present near-infrared spectroscopy and narrow-band imaging at the wavelength of redshifted Hα for a sample of 30 high-redshift, far-infrared luminous galaxies. This sample is selected from surveys in the submillimeter, millimeter and radio wavebands and has complete redshift coverage with a median redshift of z ∼ 2.4. We use our data to measure the Hα properties of these systems and to gauge...
متن کاملA Comparison of Uit Far-ultraviolet and Hα Star Formation Rates
We have used archival ultraviolet (UV) imaging of 50 nearby star-forming galaxies obtained with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) to derive integrated near-UV and far-UV magnitudes, and have combined these data with Hα, far-infrared, and thermal radio continuum measurements to explore the consistency of UV and Hα star formation rates (SFRs). In agreement with previous studies, we find tha...
متن کاملOptical Properties of 4248 IRAS Galaxies
We have investigated optical properties of 4248 infrared galaxies (IRGs) by positionally matching data from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 (SDSS DR3). Due to the large sky area coverage of both surveys, we have obtained an opportunity to study an unprecedentedly large number of 4248 infrared galaxies spanning four orders of infrared lu...
متن کاملSpatially Resolved Ultraviolet, H , Infrared, and Radio Star Formation in M81
We present Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) observations of M81 at 24, 70, and 160 μm. The grand design nature of M81 is clearly seen, showing two well resolved spiral arms containing numerous bright star forming regions. The MIPS images reveal a significant amount of cold dust associated with the spiral arms. We investigate the variation of the ultraviolet (UV), Hα, and infrared...
