Use of Computer Generated Holograms for Testing Aspheric Optics

It has been more than 36 years since Lohmann and Paris first described computer generated holograms (CGHs) [1] and CGHs have been used to test aspheric optical elements for more than 35 years [2]. Computer generated holograms are now widely used in the testing of aspheric optical elements and it is expected that their use in aspheric testing will greatly increase the next few years as the super...

Electro-optic hologram generation on spatial light modulators

Binary computer-generated holograms' (BCGH's) are becoming essential components in optical signal processing schemes. Apart from image reconstruction, these holograms can serve as spatial filters, optical elements, and the basic component in sophisticated interconnection networks.2 The present paper deals with BCGH's presented on spatial light modulators (SLM's), which provide realtime variabil...

Applications of computer-generated holograms for interferometric measurement of large aspheric optics

Interferometric optical testing using computer-generated holograms (CGH’s) has proven to give highly accurate measurements of aspheric surfaces. New applications of CGH interferometry were developed to support the fabrication of the large, steep mirrors required by the next generation ground-based telescopes. A new test to certify null correctors was designed and implemented that uses small CGH...

Coupling of surface roughness to the performance of computer-generated holograms.

Computer-generated holograms (CGHs), such as those used in optical testing, are created by etching patterns into an optical substrate. Imperfections in the etching can cause small scale surface roughness that varies across the pattern. The variation in this roughness affects the phase and amplitude of the wavefronts in the various diffraction orders. A simplified model is developed and validate...

Polarization-controlled multistage switch based on polarization-selective computer-generated holograms.

We describe a polarization-controlled free-space optical multistage interconnection network based on polarization-selective computer-generated holograms: optical elements that are capable of imposing arbitrary, independent phase functions on horizontally and vertically polarized monochromatic light. We investigate the design of a novel nonblocking space-division photonic switch architecture. Th...
